BREAKING: Fifth Juvenile Charged in Brutal North Shore Beach Assault — Community Demands Justice as Investigation Expands
A shocking act of violence that has outraged Hawaii and drawn national attention has taken another major turn.
Honolulu Police have now charged five juveniles in connection with the brutal mob assault that occurred at Waialee Beach — better known to many locals as “Dead Man’s Curve” — on Oahu’s North Shore on the night of May 30. Authorities say the investigation remains active, and additional arrests could still be coming.
The incident left two victims seriously injured: a 15-year-old boy and 23-year-old North Shore lifeguard Kekoa Tamale, who stepped in while trying to protect the teenager from a violent group attack. According to investigators, both victims suffered significant injuries, including broken bones and concussions, requiring medical treatment and hospitalization.
What has made this case especially disturbing is not only the severity of the assault, but the details that have emerged from witness accounts and police findings.
Tamale says he witnessed the teenager being dragged from a vehicle and surrounded by multiple attackers. He described seeing the boy restrained while others punched and kicked him. Believing the teen’s life was in danger, he rushed in to help. Instead, the crowd allegedly turned on him as well.
“Everyone was filming, laughing, or running away,” Tamale recalled in media interviews. “If I didn’t do anything, he would’ve died.”
The attack quickly spread across social media after videos surfaced online, sparking widespread anger throughout Hawaii. Many viewers were horrified not only by the violence itself but by the fact that numerous bystanders appeared to record the incident instead of helping the victims.
As detectives dug deeper into the case, investigators say they discovered evidence suggesting the victims were allegedly restrained and prevented from leaving during the assault. Because of those findings, kidnapping allegations were added to the investigation.
All five juvenile suspects now face charges related to attempted first-degree assault. Two 17-year-old suspects are also facing additional kidnapping and assault allegations.
Earlier this week, Honolulu Police publicly released photographs of an unidentified adult male believed to be connected to the case. The images spread rapidly online, generating thousands of shares across Hawaii. Authorities later confirmed that the individual had been identified after members of the public came forward with information. Police have not yet announced whether that person will face charges.
The case has become one of the most talked-about criminal investigations on Oahu this year. Community members, parents, educators, and local leaders have expressed outrage over what many describe as a disturbing example of mob violence among young people. The incident has also reignited conversations about social media culture, youth violence, and the responsibility of bystanders who choose to film violent events rather than intervene or call for help.
Meanwhile, support continues to pour in for Kekoa Tamale, who many residents are calling a hero for risking his own safety to protect a teenager he believed was in grave danger. Friends and family say he acted purely out of instinct and compassion, refusing to stand by while someone was being brutally attacked.
Honolulu Police say the investigation remains ongoing and are encouraging anyone with additional information, photos, or video evidence to come forward. Detectives believe more evidence may still exist and have indicated that further arrests are possible as the case develops.
This is a developing story. Updates will be provided as new information becomes available.
