Court Hears How Brave Bystanders Rushed to Confront Alleged Attacker During Dublin Knife Attack
DUBLIN, IRELAND — Dramatic testimony has been heard in the trial of Riad Bouchaker, as jurors were told how members of the public risked their own lives to intervene during the knife attack that shocked Ireland and left several children and a childcare worker seriously injured in Dublin’s Parnell Square in November 2023.
The trial, currently before the courts, has heard emotional accounts from witnesses who described scenes of panic, courage, and chaos as ordinary people rushed toward the danger in an effort to stop the alleged attacker.
Witness Describes Running Toward the Attack
One of the key witnesses, Warren Donoghue, told the court he saw a man allegedly making repeated downward stabbing motions toward a group of young children outside a school.
Realizing what he believed was happening, Donoghue said he immediately ran toward the man rather than away from the danger.
He testified that he struck the accused in the jaw in an attempt to interrupt the alleged attack and prevent further injuries.
His actions were among the first of several bystanders who intervened before emergency services arrived.
Bystanders Joined the Effort
The court heard that other members of the public quickly joined in trying to stop the incident.
Witnesses described people attempting to restrain the accused, while others reportedly tried to strike him during the confusion.
Jurors were told that at one point two women formed a human shield around the accused, apparently seeking to prevent further violence after he had been subdued.
According to testimony, one of the women repeatedly shouted:
“We’re not savages.”
The remark was described as an attempt to calm the increasingly tense situation as emotions ran high following the attack.
Attack Shocked Ireland
The incident occurred outside a school on Parnell Square East in central Dublin and sent shockwaves throughout Ireland.
Several young children were injured during the attack, along with childcare worker Leanne Flynn, who was praised for intervening to protect the children despite suffering serious injuries herself.
The attack prompted a massive emergency response and was followed by public disorder in Dublin city centre later that evening.
Charges Before the Court
Riad Bouchaker has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
He is standing trial on multiple counts, including:
- The attempted murder of three young children.
- Assault causing serious harm to childcare worker Leanne Flynn.
- Additional offences arising from the incident.
The prosecution continues to present evidence and witness testimony, while the defence is expected to challenge aspects of the prosecution’s case as the trial progresses.
Trial Continues
The proceedings are expected to continue with further witness testimony and evidence in the coming days as the court seeks to establish exactly what occurred during one of the most shocking incidents in recent Irish history.
The case has drawn significant public attention, not only because of the seriousness of the allegations, but also because of the extraordinary actions of members of the public who intervened in an effort to protect children and bring the violence to an end.
Riad Bouchaker denies the charges against him. Criminal proceedings are ongoing, and he is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
