Married During World War II, Lyle and Eleanor Gittens Are Still Together 83 Years Later as the World’s Oldest Married Couple by Combined Age
Lyle and Eleanor Gittens married while World War II was still raging across Europe. More than eight decades later, they are still together, carrying a love story that has outlived generations.
The couple, from Miami, Florida, are 108 and 107 years old and have been recognized by Guinness World Records as the oldest married couple in the world by combined age. Together, they have lived for more than 216 years. But the number that moves people most is their 83 years of marriage.

Their story began in 1941, when they were students at Clark Atlanta University. They married in 1942, full of hope for the future, but their early years together were soon interrupted when Lyle was called to serve in the U.S. Army during World War II.
While he was stationed in Italy, Eleanor remained at home, pregnant with their first child. Separated by thousands of miles, they stayed connected through letters, holding on to love during one of the most uncertain times in history.
After the war, they reunited and built a family. Over the decades, they watched the world change around them. They lived through the civil rights movement, the rise of television, the Moon landing, the internet age, and the arrival of smartphones.

So much changed. Their commitment remained.
When asked about the secret to such a long marriage, their answer was simple. Love, patience, forgiveness, and the choice to keep standing beside each other every day.
Their story reminds us that lasting love is not built only in grand moments. It is built in ordinary days, shared again and again, until a lifetime becomes a legacy.
