DWAYNE JOHNSON’S HEAVY TRANSFORMATION INTO MAUI

Dwayne Johnson has opened up about the intense physical and technical challenge of transforming into the powerful demigod Maui for Disney’s live-action Moana. To faithfully recreate the character’s larger-than-life, muscular physique, the actor wore a custom-made, fully prosthetic bodysuit weighing approximately 40 pounds (18 kg).

Coming straight off filming The Smashing Machine — where he dramatically bulked up and transformed his body for the role of MMA fighter Mark Kerr — Johnson had almost no time to reshape his physique. Instead of relying solely on digital effects, the production team opted for a practical approach to capture Maui’s iconic look on set.
Working closely with Oscar-winning makeup designer Joel Harlow, the team crafted an incredibly detailed prosthetic bodysuit. The suit not only enhanced Johnson’s frame to match Maui’s imposing stature but also incorporated intricate, animated-style tattoos that helped the visual effects team bring the character’s magical markings to life. Applying the full costume, including the heavy bodysuit and long-flowing wig, reportedly took around two hours each time.

While the final result looks impressively authentic on screen, Johnson admitted the experience was extremely demanding. The heavy prosthetics were hot, restrictive, and physically exhausting, especially during long filming days in tropical conditions. “It was grueling because of the suit and how hot it was,” he revealed, noting the added challenge of performing emotions through layers of 40+ pounds of makeup and hair.
This level of commitment highlights just how far Dwayne Johnson was willing to go to honor the beloved character and deliver a believable, larger-than-life Maui for audiences worldwide. A true testament to his dedication as a performer.
