**Young Driver Causes Fatal Accident Killing 9 Buddhist Monks**

*Mukdahan Province, Thailand — July 2026*

Nine Buddhist monks were killed after an 11-year-old boy drove a pickup truck into a religious procession in northeastern Thailand, authorities said. The tragic incident has shocked the nation and raised renewed concerns about road safety and children driving vehicles.

Police say the boy reportedly stole his parents’ pickup truck and drove about 10 kilometers before losing control. The vehicle veered off the road and struck a group of monks who had just begun a traditional pilgrimage by road.

Five monks died at the scene, while four others later succumbed to their injuries at the hospital. At least 13 other people were injured, some seriously, and were taken to nearby medical facilities for treatment.

The procession, consisting of more than 30 monks and some devotees, was walking between temples as part of a long-standing Buddhist tradition. According to security camera footage, the truck was seen leaving the road moments before plowing into the group.

Authorities have placed the boy under protective care while investigators determine exactly how he came into contact with the vehicle. Due to his young age, child protection officials are expected to interview him as part of the ongoing investigation. No charges have been filed yet.

Provincial officials have offered condolences to the families of the victims and stressed the importance of preventing children from accessing vehicles unsupervised. This tragic incident also sparked calls for improved road safety measures in Thailand, a country that continues to record one of the highest traffic accident death rates in the world.
