Limeira City Says It Will Take Legal Action Over Skeleton Bridge Safety

Following the death of Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas, the city government of Limeira announced that it plans to take legal action against the Brazilian federal government over the condition and control of Ponte do Esqueleto.

In an official statement, Limeira City Hall said the bridge area falls under federal responsibility and claimed that the municipality had already sent warnings and requests for security measures before the tragedy. The city said the lack of concrete action made the situation “unsustainable” after Maria’s death.

The city also stated that the rope-jumping activity was promoted by a private company and that six people connected to the organization were detained after the incident.

Maria died on June 13 during a rope-jumping activity at the bridge. Limeira City Hall later issued a note of condolence, confirming that she was 21 years old, from Jandira, and that the incident happened during rope jumping at Ponte do Esqueleto.

This legal dispute adds a broader public-safety issue to the case. The investigation is no longer focused only on the instructors involved in the jump, but also on why the bridge remained accessible for risky activities despite known concerns.
