A baby elephant was successfully rescued after falling into a 9-meter-deep (30-foot) well in Jharkhand, India, with dramatic footage of the operation quickly spreading across social media.

According to forest officials, the elephant calf became trapped after accidentally falling into the uncovered well while moving through the area. Unable to climb out, the frightened animal remained stranded until local residents discovered it and alerted wildlife authorities.

A rescue team, assisted by heavy machinery, worked for several hours to safely free the calf. Crews carefully excavated a sloped pathway beside the well, allowing the young elephant to climb out without being lifted directly, minimizing the risk of injury.

The widely shared video shows the exhausted calf emerging from the well before running back toward nearby forested land, where officials believe it reunited with its herd.

Forest authorities said the elephant appeared to have escaped without serious injuries, though it was monitored briefly after the rescue to ensure it was in good condition.
