DOCTORS SAID BABY LUKE MIGHT ONLY HAVE DAYS TO LIVE—BUT HIS FAMILY WAS GIVEN SEVEN PRECIOUS MONTHS FILLED WITH SMILES, CUDDLES

When Luke was just 20 weeks old in the womb, his parents received news that no family ever expects to hear.

Doctors discovered that their unborn son had Trisomy 18 and a complex congenital heart condition—two diagnoses that often carry a very uncertain outlook. At their local hospital, they were told Luke might only survive for a day or two after birth.

The heartbreaking prediction left his parents overwhelmed, unsure if they would ever have the chance to truly know their little boy.

But everything changed when they connected with other families who had walked a similar path. Their encouragement led Luke’s parents to C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital, where a team of specialists offered something they had almost lost—hope.

Rather than focusing on limitations, the medical team worked closely with Luke’s family to create a personalized care plan. Through advanced treatment and dedicated support, Luke continued to surprise everyone with his determination.

Against the expectations they had first been given, Luke spent seven precious months surrounded by the people who loved him most.

Even more meaningful, he was able to spend two and a half of those months at home with his family, creating memories they will treasure forever.

During that time, Luke enjoyed the simple moments many had once thought might never be possible. He smiled at familiar faces, played with his favorite toys, snuggled in the arms of those who adored him, visited the park, and celebrated family birthdays surrounded by love.

His parents say those ordinary moments became extraordinary gifts.

Throughout Luke’s journey, the team at C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital—including doctors, nurses, respiratory therapists, and surgeons—provided not only exceptional medical care but also unwavering compassion. Their guidance helped give Luke and his family precious time together and memories that will remain in their hearts forever.

Though Luke’s journey was filled with challenges, his story became one of courage, resilience, and the incredible difference that hope, expert care, and a family’s unconditional love can make.
