The rescued spider monkey is showing signs of severe malnutrition and possible injury.
Julio César Medina, director of the Morelia Zoo, reported that the spider monkey seized in the municipality of Pajacuarán is in very poor health. The animal is suffering from malnutrition, high blood sugar levels, muscle atrophy, and psychological trauma.
He emphasized that the next 48 hours are critical for the monkey’s chances of recovery. However, the initial diagnosis is concerning due to the animal’s condition at the time it was transported to the zoo.
The director also stated that the monkey may have had its genitals mutilated. Due to its fragile condition upon arrival, this has not yet been confirmed.
He added that the reason behind this possible mutilation may never be known.
“I don’t think we will ever know why, if it is confirmed. I don’t know if we’ll be able to determine the reason—it’s very difficult. It could have been done to prevent reproduction, to slow things down,” he said.
Rescued Spider Monkey
The Michoacán State Attorney General’s Office (FGE), executing a search warrant at a property in Paracho, seized multiple firearms, ammunition, magazines, communication devices, and rescued a spider monkey that was found in conditions of abuse. One individual was also arrested.
During the operation, authorities confiscated four shotguns, one handgun with a magazine containing nine rounds, one rifle magazine, approximately 272 rounds of various calibers, three shotgun shells, several boxes of ammunition, two mobile phones, and a passport.
During the intervention, the spider monkey was discovered. An initial assessment revealed that the animal was weak, malnourished, and showed clear signs of neglect, indicating it had not been kept under proper welfare conditions required for the species. As a result, the monkey was placed under protective care to receive treatment and to proceed with the appropriate legal processes.
At the scene, Álvaro “N” was arrested. Along with the seized items, he was handed over to the competent authorities to determine his legal status in accordance with the law.
