False claims circulating online have recently suggested that Jamie Varley, the man convicted of murdering 13-month-old Preston Davey, was attacked or stabbed inside prison.
That claim is false.
The UK’s Ministry of Justice has confirmed that Varley has not been attacked in prison, according to a fact-check by Full Fact published on July 8, 2026.
WHAT IS CONFIRMED?
Varley was convicted in June 2026 of murdering and sexually abusing his adopted son, Preston Davey.
The court heard that Preston suffered 40 traumatic injuries during the four months he was in Varley and his partner John McGowan-Fazakerley’s care.
A Home Office post-mortem concluded that Preston died from acute upper-airway obstruction. The examination found multiple external and internal injuries, including evidence of serious physical and sexual abuse.
Varley was sentenced to a whole-life order, meaning he will remain in prison for the rest of his life and will not be eligible for parole.
