FAMILY BOAT TRIP ENDS IN TRAGEDY: GRANDFATHER NOW FACES HOMICIDE CHARGES

What began as a summer evening on the Jersey Shore ended with two children being pulled from the dark waters of Barnegat Bay.

Now, nearly a month after the crash, their grandfather is facing homicide charges.

Stephen Schneider, 64, has been charged with two counts of second-degree reckless vessel homicide following the July 19 collision that killed his grandchildren, Mya Bella Golabek, 9, and Sigmund Paul Golabek, 7.

 THE CRASH

Investigators say Schneider was operating a 30-foot Tidewater 280 in Barnegat Bay at around 9 p.m. when the boat struck a wooden channel marker.

The impact sent the two children overboard and into the water.

Schneider and his wife, Laurie, reportedly found the children and pulled them from the bay.

Emergency responders rushed both children to a nearby hospital.

They could not be saved.

WHY THE CASE HAS NOW BECOME A CRIMINAL PROSECUTION

Authorities now allege that Schneider was impaired by alcohol while operating the vessel.

In addition to the two homicide counts, he faces charges for operating a vessel under the influence and reckless operation of a vessel.

His blood-alcohol level has not been publicly disclosed in the reports reviewed.

That distinction matters because the allegations must still be established through the legal process.

Mya and Sigmund were siblings.

Their obituaries describe them as exceptionally close, with a bond that extended far beyond being brother and sister.

Mya was remembered for her love of sports, swimming, art and crafts.

Sigmund also loved sports, swimming and spending time with family and friends.

They were also reportedly devoted to their dogs.

Their lives were far bigger than the accident that took them away.

THE NIGHT THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

Witnesses described a chaotic rescue effort after the crash.

Local officials said first responders immediately entered the water to help.

One child was reportedly seen with a life jacket nearby as rescuers attempted CPR.

The tragedy deeply affected the Bayville community.

One local councilman described it simply as “a real tragedy.”

NOW THE GRANDFATHER MUST FACE COURT

Schneider reportedly surrendered himself to police and was taken into custody.

He is now awaiting further court proceedings.

The charges represent allegations, not a final finding of guilt.

But the criminal case has fundamentally changed the story surrounding that July night.

What initially appeared in public reports as a devastating boating accident is now also the subject of a homicide prosecution.

 ONE FAMILY BOAT TRIP.

 A COLLISION IN THE DARK.

 AND NOW TWO HOMICIDE CHARGES.

For Mya and Sigmund’s family, no criminal proceeding can undo what happened that night.

But the court process will now have to determine exactly what happened on Barnegat Bay — and whether the grandfather’s actions meet the legal standard for reckless vessel homicide.
