Family of 18-Year-Old Tourist Sues NYC for $105 Million After Central Park Carriage Accident

Indian Tourist, 18, Dies in Central Park Carriage Accident as Family Seeks $105 Million

Romanch Mahajan, an 18-year-old tourist from India, died following a tragic horse-drawn carriage accident in New York City’s Central Park on June 17, 2026.

According to legal filings submitted by Mahajan’s family, the accident occurred while the family was taking a horse-drawn carriage ride through the park.

The family alleges that the horse became frightened by “stray voltage,” causing the carriage to suddenly bolt. Romanch was reportedly thrown from the carriage while attempting to help his mother.

He suffered fatal injuries and later died.

Following the tragedy, Mahajan’s family filed a Notice of Claim, a legal step that generally signals an intention to pursue a lawsuit against a government entity. The filing names New York City, Con Edison, and several city agencies.

The family is seeking approximately $105 million in damages.

Importantly, the $105 million is an amount the family is seeking—not money that has been awarded by a court or agreed to by the city or other defendants. Any potential compensation would depend on subsequent legal proceedings, negotiations, or a court ruling.

The family’s allegations regarding stray voltage and the circumstances of the accident remain matters to be established through the legal process.

Romanch’s death has left his family mourning the loss of an 18-year-old who was visiting New York with his loved ones. The legal action now seeks to determine whether any parties should be held responsible for the circumstances that led to the fatal carriage accident.

The case remains ongoing.
