HUMAN REMAINS FOUND NEAR PALOMAR MOUNTAIN — AUTHORITIES SAY THEY ARE NOT BELIEVED TO BE ANGELICA BROPHY
A discovery of human remains near Palomar Mountain has brought renewed attention to the disappearance of California mother and emergency-room nurse Angelica Brophy.
On August 12, a volunteer Search and Rescue team found human remains in an embankment near the 33000 block of South Grade Road in Pauma Valley, according to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office.
But authorities have made one point clear:
The remains are not currently believed to be those of Angelica Brophy.
THE DISCOVERY
The remains were found roughly in the broader Palomar Mountain area where investigators have been searching for Brophy.
The Sheriff’s Office Homicide Unit has taken responsibility for the remains investigation, while the Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the cause and manner of death.
The identity of the person whose remains were discovered has not yet been publicly established.
ANGELICA IS STILL MISSING
Brophy, 44, disappeared on July 6.
She was last known to have been in the Palomar Mountain area, and her vehicle was later discovered at Palomar Mountain State Park.
Extensive searches involving multiple agencies, search teams and specialized resources have failed to locate her.
Oceanside police have previously said there is no evidence of foul play at this stage and that detectives continue to pursue newly developed leads.
TWO INVESTIGATIONS — NO CONFIRMED CONNECTION
The discovery naturally raises questions because of its proximity to the search area.
But investigators have not established a connection between the remains and Brophy’s disappearance.
That distinction is important.
Until the remains are identified and investigators determine their circumstances, there is no verified basis to say they belong to Angelica or that the discovery changes the direction of her case.
THE SEARCH CONTINUES
The San Diego Sheriff’s Office remains in contact with Oceanside police, who are communicating with Brophy’s family.
Authorities continue to ask anyone with relevant information about either investigation to come forward.
