‘SHE SHOWS ME THE BEAUTY OF THE WORLD’: BABY KITTY SMILES THROUGH HEART FAILURE, LOW GLUCOSE AND DOWN SYNDROME

At her 20-week ultrasound, Kitty Cosette Ola was already facing a journey her family could never have imagined.

Her parents had entered the appointment filled with excitement. Their family crowded into the small ultrasound room, eager for a glimpse of the baby they had chosen not to learn the gender of before birth.

Doctors discovered that the baby had heart problems and could not clearly see a nasal bone. Genetic testing later confirmed that their unborn child was very likely to have Down syndrome.

Further scans revealed even more challenges. Kitty had an atrial septal defect (ASD) and ventricular septal defect (VSD), while doctors also noticed a concerning shadow near her aorta.

Then came another difficult discovery: Kitty had a problem with her digestive tract that meant her stomach contents could not pass normally.

Her mother admitted that the mounting diagnoses became overwhelming.

“I remember thinking, this is my last straw,” she recalled. “I just broke down. I had been trying so hard to stay strong.”

Then, two weeks after her son Kai’s first birthday, the day they had been waiting for finally arrived.

After months of wondering, her parents finally knew they had a daughter. Her mother remembers being struck by how alert Kitty was, blinking at everything around her with wide, curious eyes.

“I thought she was perfect,” she recalled.

Just 15 minutes after birth, she was transferred to Boston Children’s Hospital. At only five days old, she underwent surgery to repair her intestinal problem.

Three days later, doctors discovered that her aorta was indeed narrowed. At eight days old, Kitty underwent another major procedure to correct it.

Her ammonia levels suddenly rose to dangerous levels, while her blood glucose remained unusually low. Doctors eventually diagnosed her with Hyperinsulinism-Hyperammonemia (HIHA), a rare endocrine condition that can cause dangerously low blood sugar.

For Kitty, one challenge seemed to lead directly into another.

She remained in heart failure, and by five weeks old, doctors determined that she could no longer wait for open-heart surgery.

Even finding the right medication was complicated. A treatment that could help control her endocrine condition carried serious risks because of her heart problems, and on three occasions, it came dangerously close to causing further complications.

Then came another devastating phone call.

Kitty had suffered a seizure.

Her mother, who had spent weeks trying to remain hopeful and strong for her daughter, finally reached her breaking point.

“I remember standing in the shower and crying,” she said. “I prayed that if she was going to be taken from me, I couldn’t bear to be kept waiting in that pain.”

Her family eventually transferred to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, where doctors were finally able to find an endocrine treatment her body could tolerate.

After an exhausting stay in hospital, Kitty was eventually able to go home.

Because of her complex medical needs, her family knows that illnesses may still bring her back to the hospital, especially while she is young. Yet her parents now look beyond the hospital rooms and medical challenges toward the future they once feared they might never have.

And there is one person who makes that future even brighter: her big brother Kai.

Her family dreams of watching the two children grow up together, with Kai becoming the playmate who keeps his little sister company through the difficult days.

Despite heart failure, Down syndrome, dangerously low blood sugar and the many procedures she has endured, Kitty continues to surprise everyone around her.

And when she wants to be heard, she does not quietly fuss — she lets everyone know with a determined little scream.

“She is the fiercest little woman I’ve ever met,” her mother said.

Kitty’s journey has transformed the way her family sees life. Every smile now feels precious. Every day at home is something to celebrate.

“She shows me the beauty of the world,” her mother shared. “She has made people pray who never prayed before.”

For a little girl who entered the world carrying so many medical challenges, Kitty has already accomplished something extraordinary.

She has endured surgery after surgery, spent countless days in hospitals, faced frightening setbacks and repeatedly shown a strength far beyond her tiny size.
