HER CAR WAS FOUND IN THE MOUNTAINS — THEN HUMAN REMAINS WERE DISCOVERED NEARBY. BUT ANGELICA BROPHY IS STILL MISSING
For more than six weeks, the family of Angelica Brophy has been living with the same unanswered question:
Where is she?
The 44-year-old emergency-room nurse and mother of two disappeared on July 6 after dropping her daughter off at summer camp.
Later that afternoon, surveillance footage placed Angelica at Harrah’s Resort Southern California.
About 50 minutes later, she entered Palomar Mountain State Park, a place where she was known to hike. She purchased a parking pass and drove into the mountainous area alone.
Then the trail went cold.
HER CAR WAS FOUND — BUT SHE WASN’T
Angelica’s vehicle was discovered inside Palomar Mountain State Park on July 9.
Authorities searched the surrounding terrain, including the area around Doane Pond, but found no sign of her.
Her phone also failed to provide investigators with a usable location signal.
The search has been complicated by the rugged terrain and the size of the mountainous area.
THEN CAME ANOTHER DISTURBING DISCOVERY
On August 12, a volunteer with a San Diego County Search and Rescue team discovered human remains in an embankment near South Grade Road in Pauma Valley.
The location immediately raised questions because of its proximity to the area where Angelica disappeared.
But authorities later delivered a crucial clarification:
The remains are not currently believed to be Angelica.
The Sheriff’s Homicide Unit is investigating the identity and circumstances surrounding those remains, while the Medical Examiner will determine the cause and manner of death.
SO WHERE IS ANGELICA?
That is the mystery that remains.
There has been no confirmed discovery of Angelica.
Her family is still waiting.
And investigators continue asking anyone with information about her disappearance to come forward.
Authorities have also said there is no known threat to the wider community connected to the discovery of the remains.
For Angelica’s loved ones, the latest discovery brought another wave of uncertainty.
They briefly had to confront the possibility that the search might have ended in the worst possible way.
Then came the confirmation that the remains were not believed to be hers.
So the central question remains exactly where it was:
WHAT HAPPENED TO ANGELICA BROPHY AFTER SHE ENTERED PALOMAR MOUNTAIN?
Her car was found.
Her trail disappeared.
Human remains were discovered nearby.
But Angelica herself is still missing.
And her family is still waiting for answers.
Authorities have not publicly established what happened to Angelica Brophy. The discovery of human remains near Palomar Mountain is being investigated separately, and officials currently do not believe the remains are connected to her disappearance.
