The incident happened Saturday afternoon at Richmond Park, where emergency services were called after the man was injured by a stag reportedly approaching visitors while looking for food.

Paramedics and police arrived and found the injured man suffering from chest wounds. He was taken to hospital, where his injuries were assessed as not life-threatening or life-changing.

WHY WAS THE DEER SHOT?

Authorities determined that the stag’s behavior posed a continuing danger to other park visitors.

The animal was subsequently shot and killed.

The Royal Parks said the decision was made because the stag had become a danger to the public.

Officials believe the deer may have learned to associate people with food, potentially explaining why it approached visitors rather than keeping its natural distance.

RICHMOND PARK IS HOME TO HUNDREDS OF WILD DEER

Richmond Park covers roughly 2,500 acres and is home to around 600 red and fallow deer.

The animals have roamed the park for centuries, but officials are warning visitors that their familiarity with humans can create dangerous situations.

The latest attack comes amid growing concern about visitors deliberately approaching, feeding and even touching wild deer.

Videos and photographs have reportedly circulated showing adults allowing children to get extremely close to the animals.

“DO NOT FEED OR TOUCH THEM”

Royal Parks officials have repeatedly warned that deer are wild animals and can behave unpredictably.

Repeated feeding can make them lose their natural fear of humans and begin approaching visitors in search of food.

That behavior can quickly become dangerous.

Officials recommend keeping at least 50 meters away from deer and never attempting to feed or touch them.

If a deer approaches, visitors are advised to hide food and packaging and calmly move away rather than trying to chase the animal off.

The attack is a stark reminder that even animals that appear accustomed to people remain wild.

A deer standing quietly beside a walking trail may look harmless—but approaching too closely can put visitors at serious risk.

The danger can become particularly significant when people attempt to feed the animals or allow children to touch them.

In this case, a man simply enjoying a picnic ended up needing hospital treatment.

And the deer involved ultimately had to be killed because authorities believed it posed an ongoing threat.

THE BIGGER ISSUE

The incident has renewed calls for visitors to respect the boundaries between humans and wildlife.

For the injured man, the encounter ended with a trip to hospital.

For the stag, it ended with its death.

Officials say the tragedy could potentially have been avoided if visitors followed the park’s longstanding safety guidance.

Keep your distance. Don’t feed the deer. Don’t touch them. And never assume a wild animal is safe simply because it is accustomed to seeing people.

The injured man’s condition was reported as non-life-threatening. Authorities said the decision to euthanize the deer was based on its behavior and the perceived risk to other visitors.
