‘She just looked like she was in need’: Gilbert boy honored for helping woman lost in the heat

Royal Cothrun, 14, received the key to the city after helping a 75-year-old woman with dementia find shade in triple-digit heat.
GILBERT, Ariz. — A 14-year-old Gilbert boy is being called a hero after he stopped to help an elderly woman who had become disoriented while walking alone in triple-digit heat, and his hometown honored him for it.
Royal Cothrun was out riding his bike when he spotted 75-year-old Theresa Morgan struggling to walk in the heat.

“I was riding my bike and I noticed the lady — she looked like she was really hot, and she was stumbling on the fence, and she was mumbling her words, walking the wrong way,” Cothrun said.
At first, he kept riding. But he said something made him turn around.
“She just looked like she was in need,” Cothrun said. “Still two miles away from home. And it’s 108 — it was really hot that day.”
Morgan, who had recently been diagnosed with dementia, had become disoriented on her way home. Cothrun’s smart glasses recorded the encounter as he guided her to shade and kept her calm.
“I brought her to the shade,” Cothrun said. “I called her son because she remembered her number, and then he came. He called the fire department, and she got checked out.”
Gilbert Fire and Rescue Chief Rob Duggan said Cothrun’s decision to stop may have saved Morgan’s life.
“It only takes about 30 minutes in 105, 108 for our elderly population to be in real trouble,” Duggan said. “This is a great example of a teenage kid saying, ‘I need to do something’ — truly saved a life here.”
Duggan added that the incident reflects well on the community.
“There are great kids in our community,” he said. “There are great parents raising great kids. Let’s take a minute to celebrate some beautiful stuff.”
Cothrun’s actions have drawn attention well beyond Gilbert, with national outlets including People magazine covering his story.
On Tuesday, Gilbert’s mayor and fire and rescue officials honored Cothrun during a town council meeting, presenting him with the key to the city and a Citizen Hero Award as the chamber broke into applause.
Cothrun said he hopes other kids will do the same if they ever find themselves in a similar situation.
“To help them,” he said. “Check up on them.”
What started as a moment on a neighborhood bike ride has now made Cothrun a hero not just in his community, but across the country.
