Hydrocephalus is a serious neurological condition characterized by the abnormal accumulation of excess cerebrospinal fluid within the brain’s ventricles. Under normal circumstances, cerebrospinal fluid flows continuously through the brain and spinal cord, acting as a protective cushion, delivering essential nutrients, and removing metabolic waste products. However, when an obstruction occurs, fluid absorption drops, or the body produces too much fluid, the resulting imbalance causes the ventricles to swell, placing severe pressure on delicate brain tissue.

In newborns and infants, hydrocephalus often presents distinct physical signs because the bones of the skull have not yet fully fused. The most noticeable indication is a rapid or unusually large increase in head circumference. Parents and healthcare providers might also observe a bulging soft spot, known as the fontanelle, on the top of the baby’s head. Additional symptoms can include prominent scalp veins, unexplained irritability, high-pitched crying, poor feeding habits, vomiting, developmental delays, and a downward gaze often referred to as the sunsetting eye appearance.
