PRESTON DAVEY: THE FORENSIC TIMELINE THAT REVEALED A PATTERN OF ABUSE
LANCASHIRE, ENGLAND — The death of 13-month-old Preston Davey became a major criminal investigation after medical experts identified dozens of injuries and evidence that prosecutors said revealed a pattern of repeated harm.
Investigators examined medical records, forensic findings and digital evidence recovered during the investigation as they reconstructed what happened during the months Preston spent in the care of his prospective adoptive parents.
DOZENS OF INJURIES DOCUMENTED
A postmortem examination identified approximately 40 injuries suffered by Preston.
Among the findings were bruising, internal injuries and a healing fracture to his arm. Prosecutors argued that the injuries occurred at different points in time and were inconsistent with ordinary childhood accidents.
Digital material recovered from phones also became important to the investigation, giving detectives photographs and videos that could be compared with medical evidence and witness accounts.
Rather than focusing on one isolated incident, prosecutors presented the evidence as a timeline showing Preston’s deteriorating condition.
THE FINAL DAY
Preston died on July 27, 2023, after experiencing severe breathing difficulties.
Evidence presented during the case showed that a video had been recorded earlier that afternoon while the toddler was visibly struggling to breathe.
He was later taken to hospital in cardiac arrest.
Despite efforts by medical staff to save him, Preston died that evening.
The postmortem examination subsequently became one of the most important pieces of evidence in the case.
THE MEDICAL FINDING THAT CHANGED THE INVESTIGATION
An initial account suggested that Preston had been discovered submerged in a bath.
However, the postmortem examination did not support drowning as the cause of death.
Medical experts concluded that Preston died from acute upper-airway obstruction.
That finding contradicted the explanation investigators had initially been given and became central to the prosecution’s case against Jamie Varley.
THE DIGITAL EVIDENCE
Investigators also examined material recovered from mobile phones.
Photographs and videos provided investigators with a record of Preston’s condition during the period before his death.
When combined with medical examinations and hospital records, prosecutors argued that the digital evidence helped establish when injuries occurred and challenged explanations provided for them.
The evidence ultimately helped prosecutors present the jury with a chronology rather than a single unexplained medical emergency.
THE CONVICTION
Jamie Varley was ultimately convicted of murdering Preston Davey following a trial at Preston Crown Court.
He received a whole-life order, meaning he will remain in prison for the rest of his life.
John McGowan-Fazakerley was also convicted of offenses connected to Preston’s death and received a lengthy prison sentence.
The case has since raised questions about the warning signs that existed before Preston died, including medical concerns and injuries identified while he was in the defendants’ care.
What investigators initially had to determine was whether Preston’s death could be explained by an accident.
The forensic evidence ultimately led them to a very different conclusion.
The most significant development was not a single photograph, medical record or video. It was the timeline created when investigators placed all of the evidence together—and used it to reconstruct what happened to Preston before his final hours.
