FORMER WISCONSIN FOOTBALL PLAYER JACK PUGH’S CAUSE OF DEATH REVEALED MONTHS AFTER HIS SUDDEN PASSING
COLUMBUS, OHIO — Months after the sudden death of former Wisconsin football player Jack Pugh, authorities have revealed what took the 24-year-old’s life.
According to the Franklin County Coroner’s Office, Pugh died on March 30, 2026, from acute bronchopneumonia, a serious lung infection that causes inflammation in the airways.
The coroner’s report also identified cardiomyopathy, a disease affecting the heart muscle, as an underlying condition. Pugh also had hepatosplenomegaly, meaning an enlargement of the liver and spleen. His death was ruled natural.
A PROMISING ATHLETE WHO WALKED AWAY FROM FOOTBALL
Pugh, who grew up in Hilliard, Ohio, was a highly regarded football prospect before joining the Wisconsin Badgers.
The 6-foot-5 tight end played for Wisconsin from 2021 through 2023 and earned Academic All-Big Ten recognition.
But his football career came to an unexpected end when he announced in December 2023 that he was stepping away from the sport to prioritize his mental health.
Pugh had openly discussed years of depression and substance abuse and said he had reached a point where he needed to focus on finding a healthier and happier life.
HIS DEATH SHOCKED THE BADGERS COMMUNITY
When Wisconsin confirmed Pugh’s death in March, the university described him as a positive presence who brought genuine energy to the football program.
Teammates and staff remembered him not simply as an athlete, but as someone who cared deeply about the people around him.
Pugh continued his education after leaving football and earned his degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2025.
ANSWERS COME MONTHS LATER
For months, the circumstances surrounding Pugh’s death had not been publicly disclosed.
The newly released coroner’s findings now provide his family, friends and former teammates with an explanation.
His death was caused by acute bronchopneumonia associated with cardiomyopathy, with hepatosplenomegaly also documented in the report.
There is no indication in the coroner’s findings that his death was the result of a criminal act.
MORE THAN WHAT HAPPENED ON THE FIELD
Pugh’s story ultimately became about much more than football.
He was a highly recruited athlete who reached the college level, but he also publicly acknowledged personal struggles and made the difficult decision to walk away from the sport.
His decision to prioritize his well-being became an important part of the legacy he left behind.
Now, months after his death, his loved ones finally have an official explanation for why a young man with so much ahead of him died at just 24 years old.
Jack Pugh’s football career ended before he ever reached his full potential. But the people who knew him say his impact went far beyond the game.
The Franklin County Coroner’s Office ruled Pugh’s death natural and identified acute bronchopneumonia associated with cardiomyopathy as the cause of death.
