JUDGE REMOVED FROM KARMELO ANTHONY CASE AS DEFENSE FIGHTS FOR A NEW TRIAL

A major legal development unfolded Wednesday in the Karmelo Anthony case after the judge who presided over his murder trial was removed from the case ahead of a hearing on Anthony’s request for a new trial.

Anthony, now 19, was convicted of murdering 17-year-old Austin Metcalf during a high school track meet in Texas and sentenced to 35 years in prison. Jurors rejected his claim of self-defense.

Anthony’s defense team argued that District Judge John Roach Jr. should no longer oversee the case, pointing in part to an interview Roach gave after the trial.

During the interview, Roach was asked whether the jury had “got it right.”

The defense argued that the judge’s public comments, along with what they described as overly restrictive courtroom rules during the original trial, raised questions about his impartiality as Anthony seeks a new trial.

A visiting judge, Sid Harle, granted the request for Roach’s recusal, saying the circumstances warranted removing him from the post-trial proceedings. Judge Michael Chitty was subsequently assigned to handle the next stage of the case.

SUPPORTERS GATHER OUTSIDE

The hearing drew significant public attention.

Dozens of Anthony supporters gathered inside and outside the Collin County courthouse, with some chanting:

“FREE KARMELO!”

Anthony appeared in court wearing a green prison jumpsuit, while his parents and Austin Metcalf’s parents were also present.

BUT THE CONVICTION HAS NOT BEEN OVERTURNED

The judge’s removal is an important victory for Anthony’s legal team — but it does not mean he has been granted a new trial.

The next hearing will focus on whether Anthony’s request for a retrial should actually be granted.

His attorneys have raised several issues they say compromised the original proceedings, including courtroom restrictions, jury instructions and the judge’s conduct.

Anthony remains in prison serving his 35-year sentence while those arguments are considered.

The case has already attracted enormous national attention, and Wednesday’s courtroom developments ensure that the legal battle is far from over.

But now a new judge will decide whether Karmelo Anthony gets another chance in court. ⚖️

The question everyone will be watching Thursday:

WILL KARMELO ANTHONY GET A NEW TRIAL?

Anthony remains convicted at this stage. The judge’s recusal does not overturn his murder conviction; the court still has to decide whether the defense has grounds for a new trial.
