When a baseball team takes the field, they will be doing some cheering of their own. The team will be pulling for a baby from Council Bluffs who is in the hospital facing a rare birth condition.

Brycen Burns is six months old, and he has been in Children’s Hospital for five of those months. He was born with a rare congenital disorder, Goldenhar Syndrome, which affects one in every three to five thousand children born.

“He’s missing his left ear, left lung, left kidney and his left jaw is underdeveloped.” Kristin Burns, Brycen’s mom listed off his symptoms to WOWT’s John Chapman.

“We keep trying to tell him that life’s better on the outside, I don’t know if he believes us yet.” she said.

Brycen’s mother says his case is pretty mild compared to other children with the disorder. As of now doctors are unsure of what causes Goldenhar Syndrome.

One of Brycen’s family members is the strength coach for the Florida Gators. He told Brycen’s story to the team and now they are giving him all the support they can.

They are wearing “Team Brycen” wristbands during the game, which has made the entire Burns family into Gators fans.

“That’s giving us something to watch. When we watch the games here on TV we can see that they’re supporting Brycen and Children’s Hospital and everything involved.” she said.

Brycen was taken off of life support today and while his parents are unsure of when they will be able to take him home, they say they plan to participate in studies in hopes of finding the gene that causes the disorder.

“He’s showed us how to fight and how to be strong and we kind of gain strength from watching him through all of this.”
