91-Year-Old Georgia Woman Earns GED After Nearly 1,000 Hours of Study

Helen Woodyard, a Georgia resident, has achieved an inspiring milestone by earning her GED at the age of 91.

Woodyard began studying for her GED at West Georgia Technical College when she was 88. Over the course of her studies, she completed approximately 958.75 hours of coursework and preparation before reaching her goal.

She officially celebrated the achievement at a graduation ceremony on July 29, 2026.

According to the college, Woodyard is the oldest person in Georgia to receive a GED in the past decade. The next-oldest recorded recipient during that period was 75.

Her decision to return to school was deeply personal. All four of Woodyard’s children had earned college degrees, while she had long regretted not finishing high school herself.

Decades later, she decided it was never too late to complete what she had once left unfinished.

At 91, Woodyard’s accomplishment serves as a powerful reminder that pursuing an educational dream can happen at any stage of life.
