ANGELICA BROPHY: VOLUNTEERS RETURN TO PALOMAR MOUNTAIN AS THE SEARCH FOR ANSWERS CONTINUES

More than a month after Angelica Brophy, a 44-year-old Oceanside mother and emergency-room nurse, disappeared, volunteers are once again heading into the rugged terrain of Palomar Mountain in Southern California.

The latest search is focusing on off-trail areas that may not have been fully covered during earlier efforts. Volunteers say they are determined to keep looking for Angelica and bring answers to her family.

THE DAY ANGELICA VANISHED

Angelica was reported missing on July 6, 2026.

Earlier that day, she had dropped her daughter off at summer camp in Oceanside. Investigators later determined that she was seen at Harrah’s Resort Southern California in Valley Center at about 3:30 p.m.

Less than an hour later, surveillance information placed her at Palomar Mountain State Park.

Her Hyundai was discovered in the park’s parking area on July 9, but Angelica was nowhere to be found.

That discovery immediately changed the direction of the investigation.

HER CAR WAS FOUND — BUT ANGELICA WASN’T

Angelica is an experienced hiker and was familiar with Palomar Mountain.

According to information released during the investigation, her Apple Watch last registered activity near a trailhead close to Doane Pond.

Search-and-rescue teams began combing the area, including steep terrain, dense vegetation and difficult-to-access trails.

Divers also searched Doane Pond, while law enforcement deployed canine teams and specialized search personnel.

Despite those efforts, Angelica could not be located.

 THEN HUMAN REMAINS WERE DISCOVERED

The case took another unsettling turn earlier this month when a volunteer search-and-rescue team discovered human remains near Palomar Mountain.

Because of the location, the discovery immediately raised fears that investigators might have finally found Angelica.

But authorities later said the remains were not believed to belong to Brophy.

The identity of those remains and the circumstances surrounding their discovery are being investigated separately.

For Angelica’s family, however, the discovery brought another painful reminder that she still has not been found.

 VOLUNTEERS REFUSE TO GIVE UP

Although official physical searches have been paused and resumed at different points, Angelica’s loved ones and volunteers have continued searching.

The newest effort is particularly focused on areas away from established trails, where difficult terrain could make someone extremely difficult to locate.

Volunteers are working despite heat, steep slopes and dense vegetation — determined to cover areas that may have been missed previously.

Her brother Ramon Fabregas has repeatedly joined efforts to find his sister.

“We’re going to keep on pushing until we find her,” he previously told reporters.

 ONE MONTH LATER, THE MYSTERY REMAINS

The disappearance has generated countless questions.

Why did Angelica travel to Palomar Mountain that afternoon?

What happened after she left her vehicle?

Where did she go from the trailhead?

And why has an extensive search failed to locate her?

Oceanside police have previously said there was no evidence of foul play at that stage of the investigation. Detectives have nevertheless continued following newly developed leads and conducting additional searches based on investigative information.

That distinction is important: Angelica remains missing, and authorities have not publicly established what happened to her.

 A FAMILY STILL WAITING

Angelica is more than a missing-person case.

She is a mother of two, a medical professional and a daughter, sister and friend whose family has spent weeks searching for her.

The discovery of unrelated human remains near the same mountain only deepened the emotional weight surrounding the investigation.

But her family and volunteers are not treating the latest development as the end of the search.

They are going back into the mountains.

They are checking the places others may have overlooked.

And they are continuing to ask the same question:

Where is Angelica Brophy?

The search continues — and every trail, lead and overlooked corner of Palomar Mountain could still matter.
