AUBURN, Calif. — A desperate four-day search for a 24-year-old California man who disappeared during a solo hike has ended in tragedy after rescuers found him dead in the rugged Auburn State Recreation Area.

Ian Roberts, of Roseville, California, was last seen around 9:45 a.m. Friday, Aug. 21, after heading into the American River Canyon area for a hike. When he failed to return home that evening, his family reported him missing early the following morning.

His vehicle was later located at Overlook Park in Auburn, which investigators believe was where Roberts began his hike.

That discovery immediately shifted the search toward the surrounding canyon and trails.

A MASSIVE SEARCH UNFOLDED

What followed was a multi-agency search involving approximately 100 search-and-rescue personnel, along with helicopters, drones, K-9 teams and marine units searching areas along the American River and its shoreline.

Crews faced difficult conditions as temperatures climbed into the mid-90s, while the rugged canyon terrain made some areas particularly challenging to reach.

Search teams continued working through Monday before returning to the area Tuesday morning.

Then came the news Roberts’ family had been desperately hoping would never come.

ROBERTS WAS FOUND DEAD

On Tuesday, Aug. 25, authorities announced that Roberts had been located deceased inside the Auburn State Recreation Area.

Because the location where his body was discovered falls within Auburn city limits, the Auburn Police Department is handling the death investigation.

According to investigators, preliminary evidence indicates Roberts may have slipped and fallen down a steep embankment.

Police say there is currently no indication of foul play.

However, authorities emphasized that the investigation is not yet complete and that detectives will continue examining the available evidence before reaching a final conclusion.

HIS CAR PROVIDED THE FIRST MAJOR CLUE

When Roberts was reported missing, his family helped investigators determine where his vehicle was located.

The car was found at Overlook Park, an area that provides access to trails descending toward the American River Canyon.

Investigators believe Roberts parked there before beginning his solo hike Friday morning.

But because he was alone, there was no hiking partner who could immediately tell rescuers which trail he had taken or where he intended to go.

That uncertainty made the search considerably more difficult.

SEARCHERS SCOURED THE CANYON

Teams searched both land and water.

Helicopters helped move personnel through the difficult terrain, while drones provided aerial support. Search-and-rescue teams also examined the river and shoreline areas.

By Sunday, roughly 100 personnel from multiple agencies were involved.

Volunteers and professional search teams continued working despite increasingly challenging weather conditions.

For Roberts’ loved ones, every day brought the hope that he might still be found alive.

Instead, the search ended with his death.

POLICE ARE NOT CALLING IT FOUL PLAY

Although investigators believe an accidental fall is the most likely explanation, officials have been careful not to close the case prematurely.

The Auburn Police Department said the preliminary information is consistent with an accidental death, but investigators will continue reviewing the evidence and circumstances surrounding Roberts’ disappearance.

Authorities have not publicly released additional details about the exact location of the fall or the injuries Roberts sustained.

The Placer County Sheriff’s Office expressed gratitude to the people who traveled to the region to help locate Roberts and extended its condolences to his family and loved ones.

For four days, rescuers searched the canyon hoping to bring Ian home.
