18-Year-Old Hiker Lily Hooper Found Dead After Eight-Day Search in Australian National Park

The family of 18-year-old Lily Hooper is mourning after her body was discovered following an extensive search for the missing teenager in New South Wales, Australia.

Hooper disappeared on August 12, 2026, after setting out on a solo hike in Nattai National Park.

Body Found After Eight-Day Search

Emergency crews and search teams conducted a large-scale operation for eight days before finding Hooper’s body in a densely wooded area on August 20.

ABC News confirmed that the remains were those of Lily Hooper and reported that the case would be referred to the coroner for further investigation.

Authorities are still working to establish the exact circumstances surrounding her death.

Recent reports have suggested that Lily may have died from a fall on the day she disappeared, although that has not been officially confirmed and the final cause of death remains subject to the coroner’s investigation.

Family Received Incorrect Information

Lily’s family was initially told that she had been found alive, only for that information to be corrected just minutes later. NSW Police publicly apologized to the family over the mistake.

Despite their devastating loss, Lily’s father, Jim Hooper, said the family does not blame the search crews.

He emphasized that rescuers had worked tirelessly in difficult conditions to locate his daughter.

Family Hopes to Improve Hiker Safety

Rather than directing their anger toward the people involved in the search, Lily’s family now wants to turn their experience into a campaign for greater safety.

They hope to encourage hikers to carry personal locator beacons, tracking devices or other emergency signaling equipment when venturing into remote areas.
