FAMILY OF 6-YEAR-OLD LUCY MORGAN SUES BADMINTON RACKET MAKER AFTER TRAGIC ACCIDENT

More than two years after a heartbreaking family accident claimed the life of 6-year-old Lucy Morgan, her parents are taking legal action against the company that manufactured the badminton racket involved.

Lucy was on a family vacation in Limerick, Maine, on June 1, 2024, when a routine game of badminton suddenly turned into a devastating emergency.

According to the lawsuit, Lucy was sitting nearby while her siblings played when the head and metal stem of her 10-year-old brother’s racket separated from the handle.

The metal portion struck Lucy in the temple and penetrated her skull and brain.

She was rushed to a medical center and underwent emergency surgery, but despite doctors’ efforts, Lucy died from her injuries on June 5.

THE FAMILY NOW WANTS ANSWERS

On Aug. 17, 2026, Lucy’s family filed a wrongful-death and product-liability lawsuit against Franklin Sports in York County Superior Court in Maine.

The complaint alleges that the racket’s handle and metal stem were not adequately secured.

It further claims that the adhesive connecting the components was defective or insufficient and that the racket did not contain an additional safety restraint that could have prevented the metal section from separating.

The family also alleges that consumers were not adequately warned about the possibility of the racket separating during ordinary use.

WHAT HAPPENED THAT MORNING?

Lucy was spending the final day of a family vacation with her parents and three siblings.

Her father, Jesse Morgan, previously described the incident as a “freak accident.”

According to his account, the family had been enjoying lunch near the lake while the children played badminton outside.

Then they heard screaming.

What had started as an ordinary family activity suddenly became a medical emergency that would change the family forever.

Lucy was transported by emergency responders and eventually taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland, where doctors performed surgery to address the devastating injury.

A TRAGEDY THE FAMILY SAYS COULD HAVE BEEN PREVENTED

The new lawsuit argues that the racket’s design and construction played a direct role in Lucy’s injury.

The family’s attorney, Travis Brennan, said the case is intended to hold the manufacturer accountable and push for safer construction of similar products.

The complaint seeks compensatory and punitive damages, including compensation related to funeral expenses, emotional distress and suffering.

It also alleges that Lucy’s siblings, who witnessed the incident, experienced severe emotional distress.

Franklin Sports had not immediately responded to PEOPLE’s request for comment when the story was published.

FROM A FAMILY VACATION TO A LEGAL BATTLE

Lucy’s father had previously shared the family’s devastating experience publicly, describing his daughter as a bubbly, outspoken and tough child.

Now, more than two years after the accident, the family is seeking answers in court.

The lawsuit does not change the tragic nature of what happened that morning.

But it raises a much bigger question:

Was Lucy’s death simply a freak accident — or could a different product design have prevented the metal component from becoming so dangerous?

That question will now be at the center of the family’s legal battle with Franklin Sports.
