LINDSAY CLANCY JURY DELIBERATES 17 HOURS WITHOUT A VERDICT — HERE’S WHAT COULD HAPPEN NEXT

The Lindsay Clancy trial has reached another tense moment after jurors spent roughly 17 hours deliberating without reaching a verdict.

The 12-member jury has been weighing the fate of the Massachusetts mother in a case that has drawn intense national attention.

Clancy, 36, is charged in connection with the 2023 deaths of her three young children, Cora, Dawson and Callan.

The central issue before jurors is not whether Clancy carried out the acts. Both sides have acknowledged that.

Instead, the jury must determine whether she was criminally responsible at the time.

THE DEFENSE AND PROSECUTION TELL TWO VERY DIFFERENT STORIES

Clancy’s defense has argued that she was experiencing severe postpartum psychosis and was unable to understand the wrongfulness of her actions.

Her attorneys have pointed to her deteriorating mental state, psychiatric treatment and behavior in the period leading up to the tragedy.

Prosecutors have presented a very different picture.

They argue that Clancy understood what she was doing and deliberately planned the events, maintaining that her mental illness did not remove her criminal responsibility.

That conflict has placed the jury in the middle of a complicated question involving both criminal law and psychiatric evidence.

17 HOURS — BUT STILL NO DECISION

After approximately 17 hours of deliberations over three days, jurors were sent home without reaching a verdict.

They are expected to return and continue their discussions rather than immediately ending the trial.

The length of deliberations does not necessarily indicate which way the jury is leaning.

Jurors may simply be carefully reviewing the extensive testimony and evidence presented during the trial.

WHAT IF THE JURY CANNOT AGREE?

If the jurors eventually become convinced that they cannot reach the required agreement, the judge could declare a mistrial because of a hung jury.

That would not mean Clancy had been found not guilty.

Instead, prosecutors could potentially seek a new trial with a different jury. Legal analyst Neama Rahmani told PEOPLE that, given the seriousness and national attention surrounding the case, a retrial could be likely if the jury ultimately deadlocks.

Before reaching that point, however, the judge could instruct jurors to continue deliberating in an effort to reach a unanimous decision.

THE JURY HAS BEEN REVIEWING CRITICAL EVIDENCE

During deliberations, jurors have requested to review several pieces of evidence from the trial, including items connected to Clancy’s suicide attempt and prescription medication.

Those requests have drawn particular attention because the defense has relied heavily on evidence concerning her mental state.

The jury’s consideration therefore remains focused on a difficult distinction:

Did Clancy understand the nature and wrongfulness of her actions, or was her psychiatric condition so severe that she should not be held criminally responsible?

THE WAIT CONTINUES

For now, there is no verdict.

The jury will continue deliberating, leaving both sides waiting for an answer to one of the most closely watched questions in the case.

A lengthy deliberation does not guarantee a deadlock — and it does not predict a conviction or acquittal.

The next hours could determine whether jurors finally reach a decision or whether the case heads toward an entirely new chapter.
