William Jewell College Football Player MicahJo Barnett Dies After Medical Emergency During Season Opener
MicahJo Barnett, 20, a running back for William Jewell College, has died after suffering a sudden medical emergency during the team’s season-opening game against Fort Lewis College on August 29, 2026.
Barnett had just helped William Jewell take an early 7–0 lead, scoring a touchdown before returning to the sideline. Just minutes later, he experienced a medical emergency and collapsed.
Medical personnel immediately rushed to Barnett’s aid and transported him to a nearby hospital. Despite emergency efforts, he was pronounced dead.

The game was subsequently stopped and canceled following the medical emergency and Barnett’s death.
William Jewell College said Barnett had successfully completed the physical examinations required to participate in athletics and had no known underlying health conditions. However, the cause of his death has not yet been released.
An autopsy is expected to be performed as authorities work to determine what caused the sudden medical emergency.

Barnett’s death has left the William Jewell football community mourning the loss of a young athlete whose season had only just begun. His teammates, coaches, classmates and supporters are now facing an unimaginable tragedy following what had started as a moment of celebration on the football field.
The investigation into Barnett’s death remains ongoing, and officials have not announced a definitive cause of death.
