One-year-old Diesel is recovering after being seriously hurt in the crash.

His family spoke with 12 News exclusively, saying they are heartbroken and it’s a miracle he survived.

Today 1-year-old Diesel is smiling, running around, and playing with his mom.

“It hurts, especially hearing the cries from the body camera footage,” said Kaylynn Brown, the victim’s mom.

It’s a much different scene than last Thursday when Glendale police found the baby boy in the backseat of a smashed-up car. He had no car seat, no shoes, and was covered in glass.

Glendale police say the boy’s father, Steven Pokorny, reached speeds up to 97 miles per hour during the chase.

They called it off, but then found the car crashed in Fox Point, near Lake Drive.

Pokorny was wanted on domestic violence charges in Racine.

Diesel’s mom was at work during the chaos. She told 12 News she had no idea Pokorny was out driving around with their son.

“As a mom, you’re supposed to protect him, and I wasn’t there for him. It’s scary you don’t know if your child is OK; someone who’s supposed to protect him wasn’t there to protect him,” Brown said.

Police say the father left the scene of the crash and found him a short time later.

“He was walking around on the back seat, so his legs on the bottom are all cut up; he has little scrapes all over them,” Brown said.

Brown plans to file a restraining order against him and is now taking steps to make sure her little one never goes through a scary experience like this again.

“I’m going to take the precautionary measures I need to in order to keep me and my family safe,” Brown said.

Brown hasn’t spoken to Pokorny since his arrest.

He’s in the Milwaukee County Jail, charged with serious crimes, recklessly endangering safety, child abandonment, child neglect, child abuse and obstructing police.
