Former Team USA Triathlete Spencer Korwin Dies in Apparent Accidental Drowning on Shelter Island

Spencer M. Korwin, a 38-year-old New York City man and former Team USA triathlete, died after being found unresponsive in the water near a private dock on Shelter Island, New York.

Korwin was vacationing with his family when he entered the water from the private dock at The Pridwin Hotel on the morning of September 2, 2026.

When he failed to return from his swim, authorities launched a search operation. Approximately seven hours later, a dive team recovered Korwin’s body from the water near the same dock where he had entered.

Korwin was married and the father of two young daughters.

Former Team USA Athlete

Korwin had an accomplished background in triathlon. He previously qualified for Team USA in 2012 and went on to represent the United States at the Triathlon World Championships in Auckland, New Zealand.

His death has left his family and the triathlon community mourning the loss of an accomplished athlete and devoted father.

Police Suspect Accidental Drowning

Police currently believe Korwin’s death was an accidental drowning, and investigators have found no indications of foul play.

However, the official cause and manner of death remain pending. The Suffolk County Medical Examiner’s Office will make the final determination following its examination.

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident while awaiting the medical examiner’s findings.
