FIVE DEAD AFTER AMAZON CARGO PLANE CRASHES AT MIAMI AIRPORT — BOEING 767 ERUPTS IN FLAMES AFTER OVERRUNNING RUNWAY

A routine landing turned into a terrifying disaster Sunday afternoon when an Amazon Prime Air cargo plane ran off the runway at Miami International Airport, struck multiple vehicles and burst into flames.

At least five people were killed and five others injured, according to local officials. Three of the injured were reported to be in critical condition, while two others were hospitalized with less serious injuries.

The victims have not yet been publicly identified, and authorities have not confirmed whether those who died were aboard the aircraft or on the ground.

THE BOEING 767 NEVER STOPPED

The aircraft was a Boeing 767-300 cargo plane operated by 21 Air on behalf of Amazon Prime Air.

It was operating as Prime Air Flight 7598, arriving at Miami International Airport from Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

At approximately 2 p.m. Sunday, the aircraft overran the runway while landing.

Instead of coming to a stop, the massive cargo jet continued beyond the runway, struck multiple vehicles and caught fire. Thick black smoke rose above the airport as emergency crews raced toward the wreckage.

The plane eventually came to rest near a roadway, with its nose down and flames and smoke surrounding parts of the aircraft.

MORE THAN 60 EMERGENCY UNITS RUSHED IN

The scale of the emergency response was enormous.

More than 60 Miami-Dade Fire Rescue units and roughly 200 emergency personnel were sent to the scene.

Firefighters battled the blaze while rescue crews searched the aircraft and surrounding area for victims. A fuel leak also complicated the response.

The pilot and co-pilot were initially trapped inside the aircraft and were later taken for medical treatment.

Several other people were also rescued from vehicles struck in the crash.

The scene quickly became one of the most serious aviation emergencies Miami had seen in years.

THE AIRPORT WAS THROWN INTO CHAOS

Following the crash, Miami International Airport temporarily halted operations.

All runways and taxiways were initially closed, creating widespread disruption for travelers. Hundreds of flights were delayed or canceled before airport operations gradually resumed later in the day.

Officials warned passengers to expect continued delays as investigators and emergency crews worked around the crash site.

WHAT CAUSED THE CRASH?

That question remains unanswered.

The Federal Aviation Administration has opened an investigation, while the National Transportation Safety Board is sending investigators to examine the crash.

Weather conditions at the time included thunderstorms and strong winds, but officials have not said that weather caused the accident. The precise sequence of events leading to the runway overrun remains under investigation.

Amazon said it was working closely with authorities and that its priority was the safety and well-being of those affected.
