Former Team USA Triathlete Spencer Korwin Dies in Apparent Drowning While on Family Vacation

Spencer Korwin, a 38-year-old former triathlete who competed for Team USA, has died in an apparent accidental drowning while vacationing with his family on Shelter Island, New York.

Korwin was spending time on the island with his wife and two children when he went for a morning swim on September 2, 2026. He entered the water from the dock at The Pridwin hotel but did not return.

Concern quickly grew as family members and others realized he was missing. A search operation was launched, with rescue teams working for several hours to locate him in the surrounding waters.

At approximately 3:00 p.m., rescuers recovered Korwin’s body from the water near the hotel dock.

Police said the circumstances appeared consistent with an accidental drowning. No indication of foul play has been reported.

Korwin was an accomplished athlete who had represented the United States in international triathlon competition, including at the 2012 World Triathlon Championships.
