Authorities identified a woman found dead near a burning vehicle late last month, and a suspect remains in custody facing a capital murder charge.

The Palo Pinto County Sheriff’s Office identified the victim as 32-year-old Leah Dawn Adams.

According to deputies, the investigation began on August 27, 2026, when first responders answered a 911 call regarding a vehicle fire at Oaks Crossing along the Brazos River. Upon arrival, deputies found a vehicle fully engulfed in flames.

A short distance from the burning vehicle, deputies discovered Adams’ body.

Investigators with the Palo Pinto County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division and the Texas Rangers responded to the scene and quickly ruled the death a homicide.

Following an initial investigation, authorities arrested Michael Wayne Hatcher, of Mineral Wells, later that same day. Online jail records show Hatcher has been charged with capital murder by terroristic threat.

Hatcher is being held without bond at the Palo Pinto County Jail.

“Our thoughts are with Leah Dawn Adams’ family and friends during this difficult time,” Palo Pinto County Sheriff JR Patterson said in a statement.

“The Palo Pinto County Sheriff’s Office will continue working with the Texas Rangers to see that this investigation is completed and justice is served.”

The investigation is ongoing, and officials have not released any further details regarding a motive or the cause of death.
