SHE FLEW 1,600 MILES TO THE UK — CCTV TRACKED HER ACROSS A SEASIDE TOWN, THEN VITORIA VANISHED WITHOUT A TRACE

A Brazilian clinical psychologist arrived in Britain after a trip to Morocco. Six months later, police are still trying to piece together her final movements after a trail of CCTV, a missing boat and a bag left behind near a marina.

BRIGHTLINGSEA, ENGLAND — More than six months after Vitoria Figueiredo Barreto disappeared in Essex, investigators are still searching for answers.

The Brazilian clinical psychologist travelled thousands of miles to the United Kingdom earlier this year after attending a conference in Morocco.

But after meeting a friend near the University of Essex on March 3, her movements became increasingly mysterious.

CCTV cameras captured parts of her journey through the seaside town of Brightlingsea.

Then, sometime in the early hours of March 4, the trail stopped.

She has not been seen since.

THE BUS JOURNEY THAT STARTED THE MYSTERY

Vitoria had been staying in the Southend area with her friend Liliane Silva.

The two met at the University of Essex campus in Wivenhoe on March 3.

According to the BBC account cited by The Irish Sun, Silva noticed that Vitoria appeared unusually quiet and was “clearly not well.”

Later that afternoon, CCTV showed Vitoria boarding a number 87 bus in Wivenhoe shortly after 1 p.m.

Around 30 minutes later, she got off at Bellfield Avenue in Brightlingsea.

From there, investigators began reconstructing a series of movements that would eventually lead them toward the town’s waterfront.

CCTV CAPTURED HER MOVEMENTS

About an hour after leaving the bus, a doorbell camera in the Hurst Green area captured a woman believed to be Vitoria standing beside the road.

Further CCTV appeared to show the same woman walking across a field between Back Waterside Lane and Mill Street at around 3:33 p.m.

But the most significant footage came hours later.

Just after midnight on March 4, CCTV captured a person believed to be Vitoria climbing over a fence into a boatyard.

Minutes later, at around 12:22 a.m., movement was recorded at an industrial site near Brightlingsea Creek and the marina.

Another piece of footage appeared to show a person believed to be Vitoria in a rowing boat moving farther into the harbour.

THEN A BAG WAS FOUND

Vitoria was reportedly wearing a dark coat, blue turtleneck jumper, light-blue jeans and black trainers.

She was also carrying a white shoulder bag bearing the words:

“People over profit.”

Police later found the bag at the industrial site on March 9.

Her laptop was also subsequently located in Brightlingsea.

Those discoveries added another layer to an already puzzling disappearance.

THE MYSTERY OF THE BOAT

Around midday on March 4, police discovered a boat drifting near Bradwell-on-Sea.

The vessel had reportedly been unmoored near Copperas Road, close to the location where Vitoria’s bag was found.

An orange, horseshoe-shaped buoyancy aid was missing from the boat.

Police investigated the possibility that Vitoria may have untied the vessel from its mooring.

However, the boat did not appear to have been powered by its engine and was instead found drifting away from the area.

That left investigators with another unanswered question: what happened after the boat left the marina?

A HUGE SEARCH — BUT NO ANSWERS

Essex Police launched extensive searches involving specialist officers, marine units and air support.

Land, coastline and waterways were searched as detectives attempted to establish where Vitoria could have gone.

Her family and friends also appealed to the Brazilian community in Essex.

Brazilian flags were displayed in the hope that Vitoria might see them and feel that she had found a familiar and welcoming presence.

Her sister, Marina, has urged residents to continue checking properties, outbuildings and other possible hiding places for any trace of her.

SIX MONTHS LATER, THE QUESTIONS REMAIN

Perhaps one of the most frustrating aspects of the case is the lack of a clear breakthrough.

Police have examined Vitoria’s phone and financial records but have not found significant or unexpected activity that explains where she went.

Investigators have also released additional CCTV footage in an effort to reconstruct her final known movements.

The footage has provided a timeline — from the bus ride to Brightlingsea, to the walk through town, the boatyard and the waterfront.

But a timeline is not an explanation.

And more than six months later, police still do not know what happened to Vitoria.

A FAMILY STILL WAITING

For Vitoria’s loved ones, every unanswered question carries the same painful possibility: somewhere, there may still be a piece of information that could explain what happened.

Police continue to appeal to anyone who may have seen Vitoria or captured her movements on CCTV.

They are particularly interested in even seemingly insignificant footage or information from the Brightlingsea area around the time of her disappearance.

For now, there is no confirmed explanation for her disappearance.

No confirmed sighting after the early hours of March 4.

And no answer to the question her family has been asking for months:
