What happened to Hayden Panettiere in the hours before she was found unresponsive is now being examined far beyond the South Carolina apartment where her life ended.

Nearly a month after the actress died at age 36, investigators are reportedly looking at activity in both South Carolina and Los Angeles, with one question becoming increasingly important: Where did the medication she allegedly took come from?

The widening investigation has introduced new details about prescription drugs, a reported longtime drug supplier in California and the possibility that a pill Panettiere took on the morning of her death contained fentanyl. Her official cause and manner of death, however, remain pending.

A Death in South Carolina

Panettiere died on Aug. 16 while temporarily staying at an apartment complex in Greenville County, South Carolina.

First responders arrived to find her unresponsive and in cardiac arrest. Attempts to revive her were unsuccessful, and she was pronounced dead at the scene.

An autopsy was completed the following day.

According to the Greenville County Coroner’s Office, investigators found no signs of physical trauma that would have contributed to her death. But officials did not immediately determine why the 36-year-old actress died.

Instead, the cause and manner were left pending while additional testing and investigative work continued.

Toxicology results were expected to take several weeks, leaving investigators to reconstruct Panettiere’s final days while laboratory studies proceeded separately.

The Investigation Now Reaches Los Angeles

The inquiry has since expanded into what has been described as a cross-country investigation involving both Los Angeles and South Carolina.

Investigators are reportedly focusing on the drugs Panettiere may have had access to and, critically, where those substances originated.

One report alleges that Panettiere had a longtime drug dealer in Los Angeles who supplied her with multiple prescription medications, including oxycodone.

Sources further alleged that Panettiere obtained what ultimately became the fatal dose while traveling by plane from Los Angeles to South Carolina.

Another potentially significant detail concerns a pill she reportedly took on the morning she died. That medication may have been contaminated with fentanyl, according to the report.

Whether that possibility is ultimately confirmed could become an important part of determining exactly what happened to Panettiere and how the drugs involved reached her.

A Bag of Medication Was Shown to Police

The scene inside the South Carolina apartment has also become part of the investigation.

Panettiere’s former boyfriend Brian Hickerson was at the apartment complex when she died.

According to a police incident report, Hickerson showed officers a bag containing medication that Panettiere had been taking.

Brian’s brother, Zach Hickerson, later described arriving at the apartment and discovering the emergency that was unfolding.

Zach said he knocked loudly enough to wake Brian, who had been sleeping after the pair had apparently been resting on a pull-out couch in the living room.

When they attempted to wake Panettiere so they could have lunch, they realized something was seriously wrong.

She was unconscious.

Zach called 911 immediately. Brian administered Narcan, and the two men performed CPR while emergency dispatchers remained on the phone.

They continued until firefighters and emergency medical personnel arrived and took over the effort to save her.

Despite those attempts, Panettiere could not be revived.

No Signs of Foul Play Were Initially Reported

In the days following her death, questions surrounding the circumstances intensified.

An attorney for Brian Hickerson subsequently emphasized that the case remained under investigation and pointed to police statements indicating that authorities had found no evidence of foul play.

That distinction remains important as investigators examine the origin and contents of the medications involved.

The investigation is not simply centered on what was physically found inside the apartment. The new reports suggest authorities are also examining what may have happened before Panettiere arrived in South Carolina — including her access to prescription drugs while still in Los Angeles.

If investigators can determine precisely what she obtained, who supplied it and what the substances actually contained, they may be able to reconstruct a crucial missing portion of the timeline.

Her Representative Pushed Back Against Public Speculation

As theories about Panettiere’s death spread online, her representative issued a forceful statement on Aug. 25 asking people who did not know her personally to stop using the tragedy to fuel speculation.

The representative said people close to Panettiere were grieving while simultaneously cooperating with authorities.

Rather than posting theories online, anyone with genuine information that could help investigators was urged to take it directly to law enforcement.

The statement also suggested that the circumstances were more complicated than much of the public conversation surrounding Panettiere’s death made them appear.

Those closest to her, the representative said, wanted investigators to uncover the truth about what happened.

The Toxicology Findings Could Be Crucial

For now, one of the most important unanswered questions remains with the toxicology testing.

The coroner has not announced an official cause or manner of death, meaning reports about oxycodone, other prescription drugs and possible fentanyl contamination have not replaced the formal determination still being awaited.

Toxicology testing could help establish what substances were present in Panettiere’s system and potentially clarify whether one or several substances contributed to the medical emergency that ended her life.

But the investigation appears to extend beyond identifying a substance.

Authorities are reportedly interested in tracing its origin as well.

That is what transforms the case from an investigation centered on a South Carolina apartment into one that potentially stretches thousands of miles back to Los Angeles.

Panettiere’s final hours are becoming only one piece of a larger puzzle. Investigators may also need to understand her movements before arriving in South Carolina, the medications available to her, who provided them and whether anything she believed she was taking contained something she did not expect.

Until those questions are answered and the additional studies are completed, Panettiere’s official cause and manner of death remain unresolved.
