PAINTING WITH PURPOSE: THE UNSTOPPABLE DRIVE OF DEJANA BACKO

Dejana Bačko was born in Serbia without arms, but she refused to let physical limitations define her potential. From a young age, she adapted to daily life by learning to eat, write, and dress using her feet. Yet among all these skills, painting quickly became far more than just a practical solution—it became her lifelong passion.

Holding paintbrushes between her toes, Dejana started creating art as a child and joined an international association for mouth and foot painting artists by age nine. Despite her talent, her path to formal education faced skepticism. Critics questioned how someone without arms could complete required coursework, even raising doubts about tasks like opening doors or completing complex mosaic projects. Dejana silenced the doubters by earning her painting degree from the Academy of Arts in Novi Sad.

Her determination did not stop at the canvas. In 2016, Dejana took up para taekwondo, mastering powerful kicks with the same precision she applied to art. Within a few years, she rose to international prominence, winning world championship titles in both 2019 and 2021, while also practicing para archery.

Despite her athletic success, Dejana always viewed herself primarily as an artist who happened to excel at sports. In 2023, she embraced motherhood, stepping back from athletic competitions to dedicate her time to her daughter, her family, and her artwork.

While many focus first on her physical disability, her life story offers far greater accomplishments to celebrate: professional artist, university graduate, two-time world champion, and mother. Her journey proves that determination and adaptability can redefine human capability.
