When baby Archibald ‘Archie’ Andrew Innes was born on January 6, his parents already knew their little boy would enter the world with an extraordinary challenge.

Archie was born with anophthalmia, a rare condition in which the eyes do not develop. He is among only a handful of children in the Sydney region born with no light perception at all.

Yet from the moment his parents held him in their arms, they saw far more than his diagnosis.

They saw a remarkably strong little boy with a beautiful smile, a joyful personality and a warmth that seems to draw everyone around him closer.

His older sister Alba, then three, adored him from the very beginning.

But Archie’s journey had begun long before his birth.

His mother had enjoyed a healthy pregnancy until a scan at 28 weeks raised concerns about a possible brain abnormality. She was referred to a Foetal Maternal Unit, where an MRI scan delivered news that would change the family’s lives forever.

Doctors told her that her baby was expected to be born without eyes.

“The last weeks of pregnancy were filled with so much uncertainty,” his family recalled. “We were trying to understand what life would look like and how we would raise our little boy.”

But after Archie was born, the family learned that there was much more to his medical journey.

Genetic testing revealed that he had SOX2 syndrome, an extremely rare condition affecting around one in 250,000 births. Archie’s particular genetic mutation was so unusual that, according to his family, only one other recorded case was known at the time.

For his parents, the diagnosis brought another wave of uncertainty.

“By then, we realized just how much our little boy had already overcome simply by making it into our arms,” they said.

At just four weeks old, Archie was diagnosed with mild to moderate neurosensory hearing loss and began wearing hearing aids.

Between two and five months of age, he was admitted to hospital six separate times because of respiratory infections, requiring high-flow oxygen.

At two months, he needed a nasogastric tube for feeding. He continues to rely on the tube because of silent aspiration and an oral aversion.

When Archie was four months old, doctors carried out another MRI to examine the structure of his inner ears and determine whether his hearing might deteriorate.

Thankfully, the results showed that his hearing loss was non-progressive.

However, the scan also revealed several brain abnormalities that doctors believed could affect his development.

At nine months, Archie was admitted to hospital once again with another respiratory infection.

Through every hospital stay, examination and setback, his family continued to stand beside him.

Archie also faces significant motor delays and has struggled to lift his head independently — another challenge his family has learned to take one step at a time.

Despite everything, those closest to Archie say his personality shines through.

“He is such a happy, content little boy,” his family said. “People often describe him as having a magical aura. His smile is contagious, and everyone who meets him seems to fall in love with him.”

His parents admit that the uncertainty surrounding Archie’s future has been one of the hardest parts of their journey.

There are no easy answers about what lies ahead, and each new development has brought another reason to worry.

But alongside the difficult days have been countless moments of joy — his smile, his bond with his big sister and the determination he continues to show.

“We don’t know exactly what the future holds for Archie,” his family shared. “But we know how incredibly loved he is, and we will continue to be there for him through every step.”

For a little boy who began life facing challenges few could imagine, Archie has already shown his family something far more powerful than any diagnosis.

His journey is not defined by what he cannot see, but by the love surrounding him, the courage he continues to show and the unmistakable joy he brings into the lives of everyone who meets him.
