Cannon Hall Farm has been facing an extraordinarily difficult period, with devastating losses among its beloved Shire horses coming alongside deeply painful news for one of the farming families connected to the Yorkshire attraction.

The South Yorkshire farm, made famous to millions of viewers through The Yorkshire Vet and Springtime on the Farm, has recently been forced to say goodbye to several much-loved animals.

And behind the scenes, Farmer Ruth and her family have also been dealing with a devastating personal situation.

RUBY’S FINAL DAYS LEAVE FARMER ROB HEARTBROKEN

One of the most recent losses involved Ruby, a horse who had become a familiar part of life at Cannon Hall Farm.

Farmer Rob became emotional earlier this year when he revealed that Ruby’s condition had deteriorated to the point where she was struggling to stand properly.

After consulting the farm’s veterinary team, the heartbreaking decision was made to put Ruby to sleep.

Rob explained that Ruby was effectively on three legs and that he could not, in good conscience, continue to keep her going in that condition.

The decision left the farmer visibly upset as he said goodbye to another beloved animal.

THE FARM HAD ALREADY SUFFERED ANOTHER MAJOR LOSS

Ruby’s death came after other painful losses within the farm’s Shire horse family.

In February 2022, the farm announced the death of Lottie, a giant 19-hand Shire horse who experienced a sudden decline in health.

Then, in June 2025, three-year-old Shire stallion Herkules died after struggling with colic.

Farmer Rob previously described Herkules as a horse who had left a huge impression on the Nicholson family.

The loss was particularly significant because Herkules had been expected to play an important role in the farm’s future Shire breeding programme.

FIVE SHIRE FOALS BRING A GLIMMER OF HOPE

Despite the heartbreaking losses, there has also been some encouraging news.

Cannon Hall Farm has five Shire foals — Soldier, Iris, Athena, Captain and Major.

Two of the youngsters, Iris and Soldier, experienced serious complications and required specialist hospital treatment.

Both eventually returned safely to the farm.

The farm later shared an emotional online broadcast with Rob and Dave, allowing followers to see all five foals and hear more about the difficult months the Shire team had experienced.

In the September 17 episode, vet Shona Searson visited Cannon Hall Farm to scan two mares, Silver and Brooke.

The scans were significant because the mares could potentially be carrying foals by Herkules.

For Rob and Dave Nicholson, the possibility offered hope that the much-loved stallion’s legacy could continue despite his death from colic.

It was another reminder that life on the farm continues even after painful losses.

FARMER RUTH FACES A PERSONAL BATTLE TOO

Away from the animals, another heartbreaking story has affected the Cannon Hall Farm family.

Farmer Ruth’s husband, Dave, has been diagnosed with stage 4 terminal cancer.

According to a message shared by Cannon Hall Farm, Dave is undergoing intensive treatment, including chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

The farm described Ruth as a special part of the Cannon Hall family and said that she and her family had received devastating news.

Supporters subsequently rallied around the family, with a fundraiser established to provide financial assistance during the difficult months ahead.

A FARM COMMUNITY TRYING TO KEEP GOING

Despite everything that has happened, Cannon Hall Farm continues to welcome visitors and share its animals and farming life with the public.

The farm recently hosted a special event with equine vet Marco on September 20, giving supporters an opportunity to hear directly about the challenges surrounding its Shire horses.
