THE BOY WITH EYES FROM ANOTHER WORLD: ABUSHE’S JOURNEY

In the town of Jinka, located in Ethiopia’s Omo Valley, a boy named Abushe was born with a feature his community had never seen before: piercing, light eyes against deep dark skin. To many, his appearance was unsettling. Classmates called him names, peers avoided him, and community members viewed his eyes as a bad omen rather than a natural occurrence.

The medical explanation was genetic. Abushe was born with Waardenburg syndrome, a rare condition that disrupts melanin production and pigmentation. Affecting roughly 1 in 40,000 people, the syndrome can produce strikingly light-colored eyes that stand in stark contrast to darker skin tones.

Life presented continuous challenges for Abushe. Living with his grandparents in a small hut, he faced tragedy when a fire destroyed their home and belongings. Yet, Abushe managed to rescue his most prized possession: a red soccer ball. Aspiring to play professionally, he idolized Lionel Messi, once remarking, “Messi is just like me. He is not like the others.”

His life transformed when photographers discovered him. A French photographer captured his portrait in 2016, and the striking images quickly went viral worldwide. A travel blogger later described his eyes as looking “like two tiny planets.” Almost overnight, a boy once ridiculed for his differences became a globally recognized face, eventually named among the people with the most beautiful eyes on the planet.
