Doctors told her baby would be born without hands and suggested considering other options. However, a young mother found the strength to continue her pregnancy and welcomed a beautiful baby girl. She now shares their story of love, courage, and acceptance.

According to a compelling account on LoveWhatMatters, Vanessa McLeod, a young woman from Vancouver, British Columbia, was thrilled to be expecting her second child—a baby girl she planned to name Ivy. But when her midwife called her in after a routine scan, Vanessa immediately feared that something was “terribly, horribly wrong.”

Her biggest fear was being told she might lose her baby. Instead, doctors explained that her unborn daughter was expected to be missing “both forearms and hands.” Vanessa described the news as “a punch to the gut.”

She then had to make what she called “the hardest” phone call to her husband. His immediate reaction was, “What, no hands?” The couple later met with specialists at Vancouver Children’s Hospital, but Vanessa says those appointments left them with even more questions.

During one appointment, a doctor suggested that ending the pregnancy might be the best option. “THAT had never crossed my mind, but here they were, offering it,” Vanessa recalled.

It was an option Vanessa did not want to consider. When her husband passionately told her to “do whatever it takes” and promised to “take care of her for the rest of her life,” Vanessa knew she wanted to continue the pregnancy.

“[The baby] was ours to love and protect, and we did already love her,” she said.

So the couple continued with the pregnancy despite the concerns raised by doctors.

The following months brought a mix of emotions, including moments of doubt, but Vanessa remained certain she was doing what felt right for her family.

“[T]he Universe chose me, out of millions of mothers, to be Ivy’s mom,” she shared.

As her due date approached, her perspective changed once again. “It’s not Ivy who needs me,” she wrote. “I need her because she completes me, completes my family, in ways I never realized.”

Vanessa’s daughter was born in February, four weeks early, but healthy. When Vanessa saw her baby for the first time, she remembers feeling an overwhelming sense of peace.

In the months that followed, Ivy grew rapidly and reached her milestones on time. Vanessa says she sometimes wished the doctors who had raised concerns about her future could hear the “magical sound” of Ivy’s giggles.

Soon after Ivy’s birth, Vanessa organized a touching photoshoot with photographer Melissa Hopfner to celebrate her daughter and show the world just how beautiful she is. Vanessa does not see her daughter’s difference as something that diminishes her.

She does have concerns about Ivy’s future, especially the possibility of being judged or treated differently by others. But she hopes to teach her daughter that differences are simply part of being human.

“We’re all different in so many ways, and that’s okay. And I hope I can teach my daughter that. Some people have blue eyes, some have green. Some have blonde hair, some have brown. Some are born with hands, some without.”

Vanessa believes Ivy will continue to grow, adapt, and find her own ways of doing things.

She concluded her powerful message with words that capture exactly how she sees her daughter: Ivy is “absolutely, unequivocally, undeniably perfect.”
