HEARTBREAK AS KYLE GEOGHEGAN FOUND DEAD AFTER 10-DAY SEARCH AT WESTMEATH LAKE

A 10-day search for missing Westmeath man Kyle Geoghegan has ended in tragedy after his body was recovered from Lough Ennell.

Kyle, who was in his 20s and from the Castletown Geoghegan area, had been the focus of an extensive search operation after his 17-foot fishing boat was discovered abandoned on an island in the lake.

His body was recovered on Tuesday morning, bringing an end to a major multi-agency operation involving Gardaí, specialist search teams and hundreds of volunteers.

The search at Lough Ennell continued for 10 days after Kyle was reported missing.

Garda Water Unit personnel worked alongside local sub-aqua teams, Civil Defence, the Garda Dog Unit and specialist search and rescue groups.

Sonar equipment, drones and boats were also used as search teams covered a wide area of the lake.

Hundreds of members of the local community and volunteers from other parts of Ireland joined the effort, responding to repeated appeals for assistance.

Kyle’s fishing boat, measuring approximately 17 feet, had been found abandoned on an island in Lough Ennell, prompting the major search.

Gardaí had appealed to anyone who might have seen Kyle or his boat during the relevant period to come forward with information.

SEARCH ENDS IN HEARTBREAK

On Tuesday, Garda divers, local fishermen and members of Mallow Search and Rescue recovered a body from the lake.

The remains were brought to Regional Hospital Mullingar, where a post-mortem examination is due to take place.

The coroner has been notified.

Authorities have not publicly confirmed the circumstances or cause of Kyle’s death, and those details are expected to depend on the post-mortem and ongoing enquiries.

News of Kyle’s death prompted an outpouring of grief from clubs and organisations connected to his community.

Boyne Fishermans Rescue and Recovery described the conclusion of the search as “tragic and heartbreaking”, while sending condolences to Kyle’s family and friends.

Castletown Geoghegan Hurling Club also paid tribute, thanking the many people who gave their time to help with the search.

The club said the huge response was a reflection of the community coming together during an incredibly difficult time.

St Malachy’s GFC also expressed its deepest sympathies to Kyle’s loved ones and the wider Castletown Geoghegan and Mullingar communities.

A Dublin Gaelic supporters’ community described the news as “absolutely heartbreaking”, saying the family had the support of people across the community during the difficult days ahead.

A COMMUNITY THAT NEVER STOPPED LOOKING

The search for Kyle brought together professional rescuers, local organisations and ordinary members of the public.

Gardaí later thanked the State agencies, local groups and people from across Ireland who contributed to the operation.

For 10 days, volunteers continued searching the lake and surrounding areas, hoping for a different outcome.

Instead, the search ended with the devastating discovery of Kyle’s body.

Funeral details released by his family state that Kyle will be laid to rest on Saturday, October 3, following funeral Mass at St Michael’s Church in Castletown Geoghegan.

His family has asked that their privacy be respected as they grieve.

Kyle’s death has left his family, friends and a close-knit Westmeath community mourning the loss of a young man whose disappearance brought hundreds of people together in the hope of bringing him home.
