FIGHTING FOR RECOVERY: A MOTHER’S JOURNEY TO RETURN TO HER FIVE CHILDREN
Jhoana, a mother of five children, is facing the hardest battle of her life as she fights a severe tumor in her back that has severely compromised her mobility. Today, the disease has progressed to the point where she can no longer stand up on her own.

Her story gained widespread attention through Colombian content creator Nadia Cartagena, whose foundation actively assists families suffering under extreme medical and financial hardships. After discovering Jhoana’s tragic plight, Nadia mobilized resources and community support to help secure immediate medical intervention. Jhoana is currently hospitalized in Medellín, where she is undergoing intensive treatment.
However, medical care covers only a portion of the crisis. While Jhoana remains in the hospital, her five young children still require daily food, stable housing, and reliable caregiving. Furthermore, if she is eventually able to return home, her living environment must be adapted to accommodate her limited physical capabilities.
To address these challenges, Fundación Nadia Cartagena expanded its efforts to construct an accessible home fitted with essential ramps and support bars. The foundation is also securing temporary accommodation for the family in Medellín and providing basic necessities for her children during this ordeal.

Regaining mobility would allow Jhoana to move within her own home independently without constant assistance. For her children, it represents the possibility of having their mother back in her nurturing role, rather than taking on the burden of becoming her full-time caregivers.
As her campaign continues, many uncertainties remain regarding the timeline and outcome of her recovery. For now, Jhoana remains hospitalized, fighting for the basic independence to stand and care for herself—while her five children wait for her to come home.
