SHINING IN THE DARK: THE EXTRAORDINARY LIFE AND LEGACY OF KARINE DE SOUSA FELIPE
By the time Karine de Sousa Felipe died at 37, she had spent most of her life fighting xeroderma pigmentosum (XP), a rare genetic disease that makes ordinary sunlight dangerous. Diagnosed at age four in Ceará, Brazil, Karine spent three decades enduring tumors, over 200 surgeries, vision loss, and cruel social prejudice. Yet, her story became defined by resilience rather than suffering.

Instead of hiding her face from the world, Karine chose to expose the reality of her condition online. Over time, her social media presence grew to more than 750,000 followers, creating a platform where she documented her medical journey, her deep faith, and her everyday family life. Through social media, she met her husband, Edmilson Alcântara, with whom she built a loving home. Already a mother of three, Karine welcomed her fourth child, Zaya, in January 2023.
Her life was a testament to courage, but XP was an incurable challenge. In 2026, Karine faced a new fight when doctors diagnosed her with advanced metastatic cancer. Entering palliative care, she remained open with her audience about her pain, fear, and faith until her condition worsened. On July 24, 2026, following an 18-day hospitalization in Fortaleza, Karine passed away at 37, leaving behind her husband and four children.

Karine never defeated XP, but she changed how she lived with it. Transforming her pain into empowerment, she shifted from a isolated girl hiding from the sun into a powerful global advocate. Her legacy endures not in her diagnosis, but in the love she shared and the light she brought to millions.
