“SHE HAD A ZEST FOR LIFE” — ZARA SHAW, 16, REMEMBERED AS A “BEAUTIFUL GIRL” AFTER RIVER WEAR TRAGEDY

“SHE HAD A ZEST FOR LIFE” — ZARA SHAW, 16, REMEMBERED AS A “BEAUTIFUL GIRL” AFTER RIVER WEAR TRAGEDY
Zara Shaw was just 16 when her life was tragically cut short after a black Audi A3 entered the River Wear in Sunderland. Now, her family are remembering a beloved daughter, sister and friend whose laughter and smile left a lasting impression on everyone around her.
For the people who knew Zara Shaw, 16, there was one thing that seemed impossible to forget.
Her smile.
Her family described her as their “beautiful girl” with an “infectious laugh and smile” — a teenager who had a zest for life and had already made a lasting impression on the people around her.
But on September 29, Zara’s life was tragically cut short when the car she was travelling in entered the River Wear near Wearmouth Bridge in Sunderland, England.
She was one of three teenagers who died in the tragedy.
Now, as police continue investigating exactly what happened, Zara’s family have shared deeply personal words about the girl they say will remain forever in their hearts.
THE TRAGEDY ON THE RIVER WEAR
Shortly before 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, September 29, emergency services received reports that a black Audi A3 had come off the road at Panns Bank, near Wearmouth Bridge, and entered the River Wear.
Four teenagers were believed to have been inside the vehicle.
A 17-year-old boy managed to reach safety and was initially taken to hospital with injuries described as non-serious.
Sadly, three other teenagers died.
They were Jackson Duke, 17, Luke Etheridge, 16, and Zara Shaw, 16.
The bodies of the three teenagers were recovered from the water during a major emergency response involving police, firefighters, ambulance crews, coastguard teams and the RNLI.
Zara was from Houghton-le-Spring, while Jackson and Luke were from the Sunderland area.
ZARA WAS MORE THAN A NAME IN A HEADLINE
As news of the tragedy spread, tributes began appearing from Zara’s school, friends and members of the wider community.
Her former school, Christ’s College in Sunderland, said Zara had attended from the age of four until leaving in the summer.
The school remembered her as a “kind and loyal student” who had a close circle of friends and positive relationships with both classmates and teachers.
Staff said she worked hard and described her as “a delight to teach.”
Those memories offered a glimpse of the teenager behind the devastating headlines.
She was not simply one of three young people lost in a tragic accident.
She was a daughter.
A sister.
A granddaughter.
A niece.
A cousin.
A girlfriend.
And a best friend.
“YOU HAD A ZEST FOR LIFE”
On October 2, Zara’s family released a heartbreaking tribute through Northumbria Police.
They described their daughter as someone who had “a zest for life” and said that “life loved you.”
They spoke about her close bond with her sister, Olivia, and the pride they felt watching Zara grow, study, learn new skills and form lifelong friendships.
They also remembered the fun she found in making dance videos, as well as the laugh and smile that her family said were so unmistakably hers.
The tribute read:
“You made us proud from day one, you studied and learnt new skills and made life time friends.”
Her family said Zara had always been their beloved daughter, sister, granddaughter, niece, cousin, girlfriend and best friend.
“A TRAGEDY HAS TAKEN YOU”
For Zara’s parents, the loss is impossible to put into words.
Yet amid their grief, they expressed gratitude to the people who had been part of their daughter’s life.
“To everyone who has been in Zara’s life,” they said, thanking them for their kindness and good wishes.
They said those people had helped shape the person Zara became.
The family also spoke about the overwhelming support they had received during the darkest moment of their lives.
They described themselves as “humbled and grateful”, saying that although the tragedy had taken Zara away, they were blessed by the memories they had of her.
They ended their tribute with a simple message:
“Rest safe our beautiful girl, Zara.”
THE FAMILY ALSO THANKED EMERGENCY SERVICES
Zara’s parents reserved special words for the police liaison officers and emergency responders who dealt with the aftermath of the tragedy.
They thanked those who cared for their daughter, saying they had not treated her as simply a number but as a child who deserved dignity and care.
The family also acknowledged that the incident would have an impact on the emergency workers who attended the scene.
Their message extended beyond their own grief, expressing hope that those responders would also receive the support they needed.
They then asked for their privacy to be respected as they continue trying to come to terms with their loss.
TWO OTHER YOUNG LIVES WERE ALSO LOST
Zara’s death came alongside the deaths of Jackson Duke, 17, and Luke Etheridge, 16.
All three were students at Sunderland College’s Bede Campus, leaving the college community mourning the loss of three young people at once.
The college described the deaths as a heartbreaking loss for both the institution and the wider city of Sunderland.
Flowers, cards and personal messages were left near the River Wear as friends and classmates tried to find a way to say goodbye.
For Zara’s classmates, the riverside became a place to leave messages for a friend who should have had many more years ahead of her.
POLICE ARE STILL TRYING TO ESTABLISH WHAT HAPPENED
The circumstances surrounding the crash remain under investigation.
A 17-year-old boy who survived the incident was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.
He has since been released on bail pending further enquiries.
Police have stressed that they are still working to establish who was driving the Audi when it entered the river and what led to the vehicle leaving the road.
No other vehicles are believed to have been involved.
Northumbria Police have appealed for anyone with relevant information, CCTV or dashcam footage to come forward. Officers have also urged members of the public not to speculate about the circumstances of the incident, particularly on social media.
A GIRL HER FAMILY WILL NEVER FORGET
There will be an investigation into how the tragedy happened.
There will be questions that investigators still need to answer.
But for Zara’s family, there is another story they want people to remember.
The story of a 16-year-old girl who loved her family, made friends, laughed, danced and brought warmth into the lives of those around her.
Her family do not want Zara remembered simply as one of three teenagers who died in the River Wear.
They want her remembered as their beautiful girl.
A daughter who made them proud.
A sister who was deeply loved.
A friend whose smile stayed with people.
And a young life that, in her family’s words, had a “zest for life.”
Zara Shaw was only 16. But the memories she left behind will remain with the people who loved her for a lifetime.
