RESTORING HOPE: THE TRANSFORMATION OF SAMIRA BENHAR

RESTORING HOPE: THE TRANSFORMATION OF SAMIRA BENHAR
For over two decades, Samira Benhar, a 39-year-old mother of two from Casablanca, Morocco, lived with a massive facial growth caused by neurofibromatosis type 1. The severe tumor covered much of the right side of her face and damaged her eye area. Beyond physical discomfort, the condition caused profound social isolation and personal heartbreak, including rejection by her husband.

Her path to healing began with a chance encounter in a local park, where a helpful pharmacist connected her with the humanitarian organization ADRA. Working alongside the Islamic Cultural Centre of Valencia, ADRA arranged for Samira to travel to Spain. Reconstructive surgeon Dr. Pedro Cavadas offered to treat her altruistically, and the Hospital de Manises in Valencia provided full medical care free of charge.
The complex treatment took nearly a year and required three major surgeries. In June 2015, surgeons removed the main portion of the neurofibroma. A second operation in October excised tumor tissue around her eye, and a final procedure in April 2016 completed facial reconstruction and fitted an ocular prosthesis.

The physical and emotional transformation was life-changing. Upon seeing her reconstructed face, Samira wept with joy, describing herself as “born again.” With the support of medical teams and charities, she prepared to return to Casablanca, reunite with her children, and rebuild her life with renewed dignity and independence.
