“I’M LOST FOR WORDS” — SON’S HEARTBREAKING TRIBUTE AFTER FATHER, STEPMOTHER AND TWO YOUNG CHILDREN DIE IN WATERFORD HOUSE FIRE

John James English says he is devastated after losing his father, Philip English, his stepmother Kim and two young siblings in a suspected arson attack in Waterford, Ireland. Two other children from the household were left in critical condition as Gardaí launched a murder investigation.

WATERFORD, IRELAND — A family tragedy has left a community in shock after four members of the English family died in a deliberately set house fire in Waterford City in the early hours of Tuesday, October 13, 2026.

Philip English, his wife Kim English, and their sons Callum, 12, and Jayden, nine, died after a fire broke out at their home in the Birchwood area shortly after 5 a.m.

Two other children from the household were taken to Children’s Health Ireland at Crumlin, Dublin, where they were reported to be in critical condition.

In the aftermath, John James English, Philip’s 33-year-old son from a previous relationship, spoke of his devastation at losing his father and younger siblings.

“I’m devastated, it’s heartbreaking and cruel,” he said, describing the news as a shock that left him struggling to find words. He also expressed hope that those responsible would face the full force of the law.

John James said one of his brothers contacted him on Tuesday morning to tell him what had happened.

The news was devastating. Along with losing his father, he was grieving for the younger members of the family whose lives had been cut short.

He spoke of the children’s futures and the injustice he felt at their loss, saying they had their whole lives ahead of them.

His words reflected the shock experienced by relatives and friends as they tried to comprehend how a family home could become the scene of such a devastating incident.

For the surviving relatives, the immediate priority is supporting one another while awaiting further information about the investigation and the condition of the children receiving hospital treatment.

Callum English, 12, was known to the local football community through his involvement with Johnville FC, where he had played for five years.

The club said he began in its academy before progressing through its underage teams. He was also part of an under-11 side that won its league two seasons earlier.

In a statement, Johnville FC said it was difficult to comprehend the loss of a family it had known so well. The club extended its condolences to the relatives, friends, teammates and coaches affected by the tragedy.

It also expressed concern for the two children still receiving critical care in hospital.

The tributes have highlighted the family’s connections to the area and the impact the deaths have had on a close-knit community.

WHAT HAPPENED AT THE FAMILY HOME?

Emergency services were called to the two-storey semi-detached house in Birch Avenue, within the Birchwood area of Waterford City, shortly after 5 a.m. on October 13.

Firefighters arrived to find a well-developed blaze. Emergency crews began firefighting operations and removed casualties from the property.

Gardaí subsequently confirmed that two adults and two children had died, while two other children had been taken to hospital with critical injuries.

The scene was secured for a technical examination, and post-mortem examinations were arranged.

An Garda Síochána confirmed that it believed the house had been deliberately targeted and that the fire had been started by a person or persons unknown. A murder investigation was launched, with the Garda National Bureau of Criminal Investigation assisting local officers.

CONCERNS THAT THE FAMILY HAD BEEN TARGETED BEFORE

The tragedy has raised further questions because the family had reportedly experienced previous intimidation and an earlier attempted arson incident involving their home.

Friends of Kim told The Irish Sun that the family had been living with fear after previous incidents involving their property and online harassment.

The circumstances surrounding those reports are being examined as part of the wider investigation. Gardaí have not publicly established who was responsible for the fire, and no individual should be treated as guilty without evidence and due legal process.

The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have appealed for witnesses and anyone with potentially relevant footage to come forward.

WATERFORD COMMUNITY UNITED IN GRIEF

The deaths have prompted an outpouring of sympathy across Waterford.

Local representatives described the incident as devastating for the city, while clergy from the Diocese of Waterford and Lismore called on residents to support those grieving.

A prayer vigil was announced at Sacred Heart Church in Waterford City for Wednesday evening, October 14, giving residents an opportunity to come together in remembrance of the four people who died and to pray for the recovery of the two injured children.

A fundraising appeal was also established to help the family with funeral expenses and provide support during the difficult days ahead.

For neighbours, friends and relatives, the tragedy has left questions that may take time to answer. The immediate focus remains on the bereaved family, the children in hospital and the search for evidence that could explain how the fire began.

GARDAÍ APPEAL FOR INFORMATION

Investigators have asked anyone who was in the Birch Avenue and Birchwood area between 4:30 a.m. and 5:30 a.m. on Tuesday, October 13, to contact them.

Drivers who travelled through the area during that period and may have dashcam footage or other relevant images are also being urged to assist.

Anyone with information can contact Waterford Garda Station on 051 305300, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda station.

The investigation remains active, and authorities have said they cannot provide further details while inquiries continue.

A FAMILY’S LOSS THAT HAS LEFT A COMMUNITY SHATTERED

John James English’s words have captured the grief surrounding the tragedy: a father, a stepmother and two young children gone in a matter of hours, with two more children critically injured.

As the investigation continues, relatives and the wider Waterford community are left to mourn those who died and hope for the recovery of the children still receiving treatment.

For John James and the family’s loved ones, no investigation can undo the loss. Their hope now is that the surviving children receive the care they need and that the circumstances surrounding the fire are fully established.
