“I DIDN’T WANT TO LEAVE” — SIR TOM JONES REPORTEDLY REJECTS A RETURN TO THE VOICE UK IN A REDUCED ROLE
After more than a decade as one of the show’s most recognisable coaches, the legendary singer is reportedly turning down a smaller role as ITV prepares for a major new chapter.
Sir Tom Jones’ departure from The Voice UK has taken another turn, with reports that the music legend has declined an offer to return to the programme in a reduced capacity.
According to The Sun, the 86-year-old singer was approached about appearing as a special guest judge in the upcoming series. However, the proposed role would reportedly have involved occasional appearances rather than returning to his familiar red chair as a full-time coach.
The reported decision comes weeks after Jones publicly expressed his disappointment at being dropped from the coaching panel, making clear that leaving the programme had not been his choice.
“I DID NOT WANT TO LEAVE”
Jones addressed his departure in a statement shared on Instagram in September.
The Welsh singer said he loved the show and appreciated its audience, explaining that he had been informed of the decision only recently despite it apparently having been made some time earlier.
He also said ITV had cited financial difficulties relating to insurance. Jones expressed frustration at the prospect of being offered a much smaller role, saying he was not enthusiastic about appearing occasionally without being involved from the beginning.
His comments prompted widespread discussion among fans, many of whom had come to associate his unmistakable voice and direct mentoring style with the programme.
A FAMILIAR FACE AFTER MORE THAN A DECADE
Jones first joined The Voice UK when the singing competition launched in 2012. Although he missed the fifth series, he later returned and became one of the programme’s most enduring coaches.
Over the years, he guided aspiring singers through auditions, battles and live performances, bringing decades of experience from a music career that includes hits such as It’s Not Unusual, Delilah and What’s New Pussycat?
His presence on the show connected generations of viewers with a performer whose career has spanned more than six decades.
For many fans, his departure represents more than a change to the coaching line-up. It marks the end of a familiar era in the programme’s history.
ITV PREPARES FOR A NEW ERA
In September, ITV announced a new coaching line-up for the fifteenth series, scheduled to air in 2027.
Cheryl and rapper Aitch are set to join returning coaches Kelly Rowland and will.i.am. Alesha Dixon and Stacey Solomon will take over hosting duties.
The broadcaster thanked Jones for his contribution, describing him as irreplaceable and acknowledging the memorable moments he had brought to the programme.
ITV also said it had loved working with him and had been discussing whether he might remain involved in some capacity. The reported offer of a guest role appears to have been part of those discussions, although the full details have not been independently confirmed.
FANS ARE LEFT WITH QUESTIONS
Jones’ reported decision is likely to fuel further debate about how the programme handles its long-standing stars as it seeks to refresh its format.
For viewers who have followed him since the early seasons, the question is no longer simply who will occupy the next red chair. It is whether the show can recreate the same connection without one of its most recognisable personalities.
Whatever happens next, Tom Jones’ legacy on The Voice UK remains tied to years of performances, memorable coaching moments and his unmistakable musical presence.
As the show prepares for its next chapter, one thing is clear: Sir Tom Jones was not ready to say goodbye on the terms that were offered.
