TWO TOP BARRISTERS INSTRUCTED IN MARK CAIN MURDER CASE AS INVESTIGATION INTO DR HANNAH TERRY’S DEATH CONTINUES
The prosecution team has been formally appointed in the case against Mark Cain, who is accused of murdering his wife, 45-year-old GP Dr Hannah Cain, professionally known as Dr Hannah Terry. He remains in custody as court proceedings continue.
The investigation into the death of Dr Hannah Terry has reached another significant stage after two experienced barristers were instructed to lead the prosecution against her husband, Mark Cain.
Christopher Paxton KC and Steven Ball have been appointed by the Crown Prosecution Service’s East of England team to handle the case. Their appointment was announced on October 14, 2026, as proceedings continue following the death of the much-loved doctor in Norfolk.
Dr Hannah Cain, who was known professionally as Dr Hannah Terry, was found unresponsive at the couple’s home in Fern Hill, Dersingham, in the early hours of October 4.
Her death has left her family, friends, colleagues and patients devastated, while the criminal investigation has drawn widespread attention because of her medical career and her work serving the local community.
WHAT HAPPENED IN THE EARLY HOURS?
Emergency services were called to the property shortly after 2:20 a.m. on October 4, 2026.
Dr Cain was found in an upstairs bedroom, unconscious and unresponsive. Paramedics attended, and police subsequently launched a murder investigation.
During an early court hearing, prosecutors outlined preliminary findings from the post-mortem examination. These reportedly included blunt-force injuries to the head and neck injuries consistent with compression.
Police have said that the cause of death remained subject to further investigation following the initial post-mortem examination.
Mark Cain, 45, was subsequently charged with his wife’s murder and remanded in custody.
TWO EXPERIENCED PROSECUTORS APPOINTED
The appointment of Christopher Paxton KC and Steven Ball marks an important procedural development in the case.
Paxton KC is an experienced barrister who has handled serious criminal cases, including murder and manslaughter proceedings. Ball is also an established criminal practitioner with experience prosecuting and defending complex cases.
The prosecution team will be responsible for presenting the case against Cain as the proceedings move forward.
However, the appointment of senior legal counsel does not establish guilt. The evidence must be examined through the court process, and Cain retains the right to a fair trial.
REMEMBERING DR HANNAH TERRY
Beyond the court proceedings, Hannah’s death has left a profound void among those who knew her.
She was 45 and had worked as a doctor for more than 15 years, including around eight years as a GP. She was associated with Grimston Medical Centre in Norfolk and also ran a cosmetic medical business.
Her professional life was defined by caring for patients and helping people in her community.
In a tribute released after her death, her family described her as “kind, generous and loving” and remembered her as a beloved mother, daughter, sister, aunt, daughter-in-law and friend.
They also expressed pride in the care she provided to her patients, many of whom knew her as Dr Terry.
The family has asked for privacy as they cope with their loss.
WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?
Cain appeared at King’s Lynn Crown Court on October 8 and was remanded in custody pending a plea hearing provisionally scheduled for December 3, 2026, at Norwich Crown Court. A trial date had not been set in the reporting available at the time of the latest update.
As the case progresses, the court will consider the evidence presented by the prosecution and the defence.
For now, many questions surrounding the circumstances of Hannah’s death remain unresolved publicly. The legal process will determine what can be established from the evidence.
A family is grieving the loss of a woman remembered for her compassion and dedication, while a serious criminal case moves through the justice system.
May Hannah’s loved ones find strength and support during this incredibly difficult time.
