“WHEN THINGS LOOK DARK, TURN YOUR FACE TOWARDS THE SUN…” — COUNTRYFILE FARMER FRANK CARR DIES AGED 35, LEAVING A LEGACY THAT WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN

He was carrying forward four generations of family farming, caring for his animals and working to secure the future of the land he loved. Now, the farming community is mourning Frank Carr, whose life ended far too soon.

Frank Carr, the fourth-generation farmer who appeared alongside Adam Henson on BBC’s Countryfile, has died at the age of 35.

The North Yorkshire farmer died on September 25, 2026, with news of his death announced in early October. His passing has prompted an outpouring of tributes from fellow farmers, industry colleagues and viewers who were moved by his dedication to his family’s farm.

Frank worked alongside his family at Lee Gate Farm in Malhamdale, within the Yorkshire Dales National Park.

The family enterprise covered more than 2,000 acres of owned and rented land, with a substantial beef and sheep operation that included approximately 250 breeding cows and 1,300 breeding ewes.

For Frank, farming was more than a job. It was a connection to his family’s history and a responsibility to help carry that heritage into the future.

After spending several years away pursuing education and travelling, he returned to the family business with a renewed determination to make farming his future.

Frank reached a wider audience when presenter Adam Henson visited Lee Gate Farm for Countryfile.

During the episode, viewers saw him working with livestock, checking on newborn lambs and explaining the realities of life as a hill farmer.

He spoke candidly about the financial pressures, uncertainty and mental challenges that can accompany agricultural work, particularly in the demanding landscape of the Yorkshire Dales.

Yet he also made clear how rewarding the profession could be.

“In farming, every day is an opportunity to learn,” Frank said, reflecting both the challenges and the satisfaction he found in his work.

His honesty helped audiences understand the people behind British farming and the enormous commitment involved in keeping family-run farms going.

A message that now carries even greater meaning

Frank once shared a piece of advice passed down through his family:

“When things look dark, turn your face towards the sun and the shadows will fall behind.”

Those words have taken on a poignant significance following his death.

His family also shared a moving tribute through Lee Gate Farm’s social media, posting an image of sunlight breaking through the clouds over the Yorkshire Dales alongside the words: “After every sunset, there comes a new day.”

The simple message captured the love and grief surrounding his loss.

Tributes to a passionate young farmer

Farmers Guardian, where Frank had been a familiar face and a contributor to farming campaigns, paid tribute to his dedication and the impact he made on the industry.

Editor Katie Jones described him as a talented young farmer who represented the best of the next generation, committed to his family, livestock, land and the future of British farming.

Frank had also served as an ambassador for the publication’s #Farm24 campaign, helping show the public the realities of modern agriculture and the people working behind the scenes.

His death has left colleagues and the wider farming community remembering not only his work, but also the promise he represented for the future.

A life remembered beyond the fields

Frank’s story was one of family heritage, hard work and a determination to keep a farming tradition alive.

At just 35, he had already helped bring the realities of rural life to a national audience and encouraged others to appreciate the challenges faced by the next generation of farmers.

His time was far too short, but the land he cared for, the family legacy he helped protect and the people he inspired remain part of his story.

Rest in peace, Frank Carr. May your family find strength in the memories you made together, and may your legacy continue across the fields you loved. 💔
